Be it known that I, PHILIPP SEILER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinols, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Acoustical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain im rovementsin acoustical instruments, as or instance .toy horns and has forits object to provide a device of this character of a simple and inexpensive .nature and of animproved construction which shall present certain-features of novelty whereby sounds of, different natures are adapted to be pro-.

duced, so -that the use of the device ,is calculated to afford greater amusement to children and other persons.

The invention consists broadly in an acoustical instrument in the form of a conical, elongated hollow body, one end of which is resonant and-provided with a clapper and the other end is provided with a reed.

It also consists in certain novelfeatures of the construction, combination and arrange-,

merit. of the several parts ofthe instrument, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, cheaper and "otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

The conical body portion of the horn is adapted to serve asa bell and in it is arranged a clapper or striker '6 held on a'w'ire or rod 7,

the body portion and secured thereto by means of solder orthe like. The clapper or striker 6 is adjacent to the larger end of the tapered horn and is adapted, when the de-. vice is swung to and fro, to strike upon the wall of the horn adjacent to its largerend.

In the use of the instrument,'it may beused either as an ordinary horn, the mouth piece bein applied to the lips so that the orn may be own or sounded in the usual way, or it may be used as a bell, the tube 4 and mouth iece 5 being grasped in the hand so that the evice may be swung to cause the loosely mounted clapper or striker to swing back and forth'so as to strike the'walls of the body portion so that a sound somewhat similar to that ofla cow-bell is produced, or the outer end maybe swung back and forth while it is being blown, thus producing a minglingof the two sounds.

'An instrument constructed as above described is of an extremely simple and inexensive nature and is'especially well adapted or use since it permits of being employed to produce either the sound of an ordinary toy horn or of a hell, or both, so that the device is especially welladapted foruse in celebrations of various kinds, as for example, political gatherings and the like.

It will also be obvious from the above descriptionthat the instrument is ca able of some modification without materia departure from theprinciples and spirit of the invention, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise' form and arrangement, of the several partsof'the device'herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
