SPINNIN'GrTOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedApr; a; 1918'.
Application filed-N ovember 28, 1917. Serial No. 204,400.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS JAMEs REYNDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the county of Butler, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Spinning-Top; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved spinning top, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved nondestructible top, for the amusement of children.
A further object of the invention is to provide a spinning top constructed entirely of glass.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for holding the top perpendicular, until the spinning cord is unwound therefrom.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means on the circular marginal edge of the top of the spinning top and the point of the top, whereby the top may be spun on highly polished hard wood surfaces.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the top constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view inside elevation of a modified form of spinning top.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring more especially to the drawings, an improved top is provided, which may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably glass or hard metal. This top comprises a circular or disk head 1, the marginal edge of which is rounded, and 2 denotes a downwardly extending axially arranged leg which is circular in cross section. This leg has a restricted neck portion 3, which merges into the bulged part e, be-
a bore 8, which is concentrically constructed with the leg, and is adapted to receive an elongated pin 9, to hold the top substantially perpendicular, until the cord or twine (by which the top is adapted to be spun) is unwound from the top. This twine or cord 10 is wound about the neck, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, and then by grasping the button 11 and pulling on the cord with the left hand and holding the angle end 12 of the pin 9 in the right hand the top may be spun. As motion is imparted to the top the pin 9 may beremoved. In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the lower part of the leg is provided with a recess 13, to receive the dovetail tenon 14 of the tip 15. This tip is constructed of reasonably hard material preferably the composition of felt and rubber, so that the point 16 of the frusto conical shape of the tip, may engage and spin on a highly polished hard wood surface or the like without scarring the same. The marginal edge of the head 1 is provided with an annular recess 17, and a band 18 engages and surrounds the marginal edge'of the head 1. This band conforms to the curvature of said rounded edge, and is constructed of any suitable material, preferably a composition felt and rubber reasonably hardened, so as to contact with the polished surface without defacing the same when the top topples over after finishing spinning. This band is provided with a tongue 19, to engage the annular recess 17 to hold the band in place, which may be molded about the edge.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as'new and useful is A spinning top comprising a body having a circular disk head having its marginal edge rounded, said body having a leg axially concentric with the head, said leg having a substantially centric restricted neck portion, a bulge, the end of which terminates in a frusto-conical shapepoint, said body having a bore axially concentric through and with the leg, adapted to receive a pin to hold the top perpendicular while unwinding an operating twine or cord from the neck portion, the extremity of the leg having a tip constructed of a composition of felt and rubber, the marginal edge of the name to this specification in the head having an annular recess, a band curved 1n cross sectlon and constructed of a composition of felt and rubber fitting said rounded edge, said band having an annular tongue engaging said annular recess.
In testimony whereof I have signed my presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUSTUS JAMES REYNDERS.
