GUARD FOR TROUSERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,432, dated August 17, 1897. I Application filed January 25, 1897. Serial No. 620,649- (No model.)

To all whom it may cancer-7t:

Be it known that I, MILTON BARCLAY HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montour Falls, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Trousers; and Ido herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive trousers-guard designed to be supported by the shoe of the wearer and to clip the fold of the, trousers from the bottom in order to prevent their creasing,and which, when the trousers have been removed byaslightpullwithout stooping to arrange the guard,is entirely removed from sight and is efficient in a high degree without constricting the ankle, as is the case where as indicated at 10. It will be observed that a circularspring-clip of ordinary and wellknown construction is employed.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing objects my invention consists in providing a spring-wire clip with a securingclasp designed to be secured to the upper of the shoe and to adjustably support the clip or guard.

Referring to the drawings,.Figure 1 is a view of my device in use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the manner in which the guard is obscured when not in use. Fig. '3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the clip in its depressed position ready to receive the fold of the trousers. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective .view of my device detached.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the shoe of a bicyclist or other person requiring their trousers to be guarded, and 2 a springclasp consisting of a strip of metal bent upon itself and provided at its extremities, respectively, with spurs 3, designed to secure the clasp to the shoe, and a curved spring end 4, designed to impinge against a spring-wire clip 5, longitudinally adjustable within a pair of parallel sleeves 6, extending along the edges of the clasp. The clip 5 is preferably composed of a single strip of wire having its ends bent into parallel relation to constitute side pieces 7 and a connecting-bar 8, the extremities of the Wire strip being bent inwardly, as indicated at 9, and extended in contiguous relation to the cross-bar 8, the terminals of the clip being bent into divergent relation,

the clip will be longitudinally adjustable upon the clasp and that it will be retained in its various positions by means of the frictional contact between it and the spring end of the clasp.

In use the clasp is inserted over the top of the shoe, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the fold 12 of the trousers is inserted into the spring-clip,which latter is then forced into its elevated position from the position indicated in Fig. 3, which it is caused to assume for the purpose of facilitating the insertion of the fold. The guard will'now perform its function of retaining the trousers-leg out of contact with the bicycle and will not constrict the ankle, as in the case of ordinary trousers-guards. When' it is not desired to guard the trousers, a slight pull upon the trousers-leg will draw the fold out of the clip and the entire guard will be removed from view by the trousers-leg. When now it is desired to use the device, it is simply necessary to depress the clip within the clasp, insert the fold in the manner described, and elevate the clip.

While the construction and arrangement of elements illustrated and described appear to constitute the preferable embodiment of my invention, I do not desire to limit myself to the details of construction herein shownand described, but reserve the right to change, modify, or vary the same at willwithin the scope of my invention.

What I claim is 1. In a trousers-guard,the combination with a spring-clasp provided with a spring end and with spurs, of a clip adjustably carried by the clasp and held in frictional contact with the springend thereof, substantially as specified.

2; In a trousers-guard,the combination with a clasp and means for securing the same, of a wire clip adjustably carried by the clasp and composed of substantially parallel side pieces connected at one extremity and having their opposite extremities bent back to constitute a spring-clip,substantially as specified.
