To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, IsAAo E. PALMER, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Tentering- Machines, of which the following is a specication.

Y The object of my invention is to provide an improvement in that class of machines in which the tenteringclamps are located around the periphery of the tentering-wheel and are opened and closed at the proper times for receiving, retaining, and permitting the withdrawal of the selvage edge ofthe material being tentered or stretched.

A further object is to provide a tenteringclamp which will be very simple in construction, positive in operation, and in which the spring-actuated jaw has a rigid grippin; r-sur-v face and the rigid jaw provided with an adjustable seat, whereby the material may be firmly and positively held against slipping when the clamp is closed and maybe readily withdrawn from the clamp when the clamp' is open.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side view of a tentering-wheel, showing a number of the tentering-clamps secured in position thereon, it being understood that the clamps are intended to extend entirely around the periphery of the wheel. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the wheel on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is avertical central section through the clamp when in its closed or gripping position, and Fig. 4t is a side view of the clamp in its open position.

The tentering-wheel is denoted by A, and it is mounted in suitable supports B, the support on the side of the wheel on which the of stationary cams b b', which cams are the one adapted to open the clamps for the reception of the selvage edge of the cloth and release of the cloth.

vided with a downwardly-extended portion c2, which is adapted to be secured to the inner face of the wheel A at its periphery. The rigid jaw o is bifurcated, and between its branches is pivoted the swinging jaw c upon a suitable pivot-pin c3.V The rigid jaw c is provided with an adjustable seat c4, which is hinged at its forward end at c5 to the upper end of the rigid jaw c. The rear or free end ot' the said seat is bifurcated, and between its branches passes the swinging jaw c. The swinging jaw c is provided with a pair of shoulders c6, which are adapted to slide along the under surface of the adjustable seat c4 and raise and lower the same as the jaw c' is opened or closed. The swinging jaw c is further provided with a suitable retainingpin c7 for still further guiding the seat c4 in its swinging movements. The free end of the swinging jaw c is provided with a rigid gripping-head C8, which is preferably provided with a series of laterallyextending teeth o9, which project rearwardly, the said teeth serving to still further secure the selvage edge of the material in position against the adjustable seat c4 when the clamp is closed. The swinging jaw c' is held yieldingly closed by means of a suitable spring D, which in the present instance is of coiled form, wound around the pivot c3 and having one end engaged with the downwardly-projecting portion c2 of the iixed jaw c and its other end pressing against the swinging jaw c'. The swinging jaw c is provided with a suitable tailpiece 010, which is adapted to be engaged by the cams b b. at the side of the wall A for opening the said jaw against the tension of the spring D at the proper times.

In operation the clamps C are located close together around the periphery of the wheel A, and as the wheel is rotated they are first opened by the fixed cam b', for instance, for receiving the selvage edge of the cloth, and

-after vtheclamps have passed part'of-a revolution they are engaged by the other fixed cam for opening them for allowing the selvage edge of the material to be withdrawn.

It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
