To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SALVATORE Dr FRAN- CESCA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Newspaper-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.

. This invention relates to a new and useful newspaper holder.

As one of the objects of the invention, it is the aim to provide a newspaper holder of a novel character, comprising a stationary jaw and a pivoted jaw held normally closed by a spring, and provided with a trigger, whereby the pivoted jaw may be opened and closed. The jaws are adapted to clamp a newspaper, in order to hold the samestraight, so that a person may easily read without ditliculty in holding the paper.

There are disclosed in the drawings certain features of construction, but in practical fields these features may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a handle, which is partially hollow, and provided with a reduced portion 2, which enters a band or sleeve 3. This band or sleeve has a top plate 1, from which a pair of ears 5 rise. Itiveted, bolted or otherwise secured at 6 between the cars is a stationary jaw 7 Pivoted between the cars at 8 is a plate 9, the upper portion of which terminates in cars 10, between which the movable jaw 11 is riveted or otherwise bolted or secured at 11 The lower portion of the plate is provided with an arm 12 terminating at its lower end in a hook-shaped trigger 13. The arm 12 is slightly spaced apart from the handle 1, in order to allow a slight movement of the arm, and in moving the arm the plate is rocked upon its pivot. I'Vhen the plate is rocked upon its pivot the movable jaw 11 is thrown open, in order to admit one end of a newspaper between the jaws. Extending through an opening 1 1 of the disk plate, and threaded into the plate 9 is a pin 15 having a head 16, between which and the disk plate 1 a spring 17 is interposed, the tension of which holds the movable jaw 11 closed. However, the jaws in their normal positions are held partly spaced apart, even though the movable jaw is held closed.

From the foregoing it will be ascertained that there has been devised an improved and desirable newspaper holder, and one which has been found practicable.

In using the holder place the center of the newspaper between the jaws 7 and 11, so that one of the jaws is in the fold of the newspaper, then hold the handle with the left hand and the paper with the right, until after reading the first page. After reading the first page fold the same back upon the other pages, and change the handle to the right hand and the paper to the left, in order to read the other side of the first page, and then continue on reading the newspaper in this manner.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In combination, a hollow handle, a sleeve fitted on one end thereof having a pair of ears, a stationary aw fixed between the ears, a movable aw pivoted between the ears and terminating at its lower portion in a trigger arm slightly spaced apart from the handle, and means for normally holding the movable jaw closed.
