SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587 ,753, dated August 10, 1897.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Tentering- Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention is an improvement in clamps for tentering-machines, and relates to those machines in which two tentering-wheels are employed, each of said wheels being provided with clamps along its periphery in position to engage the selvage edge of the cloth being treated.
The object of my invention is to provide a clamp of the above character which will be thoroughly 'adjustable, so as to enable the clamp to effectually grip the selvage edge and prevent its slipping or tearing when the clamp is closed and the material is being tentered and allow the material to be quickly inserted or withdrawn when the clamp is open.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a centering-wheel with a number of the clamps shown in position thereon, it being understood that the clamps in practice extend entirely around the face of the periphery of the said wheel. The tentering-wheel is denoted by A, and it is mounted to rotate in suitable bearings in supports B, one of which supports is provided with a pair of fixed or stationary cams b I), located in proximity to the face of the tentering-wheel in position to engage the tenteringclamps to open them at the proper times.
The clamp as a whole is denoted by C, and it consists of a rigid jaw 0, having an ad justable seat 0, hinged at c to the upper end of the said fixed jaw, and a spring-actuated swinging jaw 0 The fixed jaw c is further pro vided with a downwardly-extended portion 0, which is adapted to be secured rigidly to the face of the wheel A. The upper portion of the jaw c is bifurcated, and between its branches is pivoted the swinging jaw 0 the pivot therefor being denoted by 0 The said jaw c is spring-actuated by means of asuitable spring D, which is in the present instance shown of coiled form wound around the pivot,- pin 0 and exerting its pressure in a direction to close the swinging jaw 0 The head of the swinging jaw c is provided with an adjustable plate 0 pivoted to the said jaw at 0 The rear or free end of the adjustable support 0 is bifurcated for embracing the opposite sides of the swinging jaw 0 and the said swinging jaw is provided with suitable abut ments or shoulders 0 which are adapted to slide along the under face of the adjustable seat and raise it as the clamp is closed. A
retaining-pin 0 passes through the jaw 0 above the adjustable seat 0', and serves to retain it in engagement with the shoulders 0 The adjustable gripping-head of the swinging jaw 0 may or may not be provided with teeth,.as may be desired, and the adjustable seat 0 also may or may not be provided with teeth, as is found more desirable.
In the form shown in ,Fig. 4 the seat 0 is shown as provided with rearwardly-projected teeth 0 and the said seat is also shown as concave laterally. The adjustable grippinghead 0 at the free end of the swinging jaw 42 is also shown as provided with rearwardlyextended teeth o and the said head is convex in such a direction as to substantially fit into the concaved adjustable seat.
The spring-actuated swin ging. jaw c is provided with a suitable tailpiece 0 which is adapted to be engaged by the fixed cams b b for opening the clamp at the proper times.
In operation as the neutering-wheel A is rotated the clamps C are first opened by one of the fixed cams for receiving the selvage edge of the material being tentered. The clamps are then closed by the springs D and the material is retained until the wheel has rotated sufficiently to allow the other fixed cam to again open the clamps, when the material may be freely withdrawn therefrom.
By reason of the adj ustability of the clamping-jaw and the adjustable seat therefor the material when engaged by the clamp is held absolutely against slipping and tearing and yet may be. Very readily inserted into or disengaged from the clamp when it is open.

Aclamp fortentearing-machines,comprising a rigid jaw, an adjustable seat pivoted thereon, a spring-actuated swinging jaw pivoted to the fixed jaw and an adjustable gripping-plate pivoted to the swinging jawin position to grip the material between it and the adjustable seat when the clamp is closed, substantially as set forth.
3. A clamp for tentering-lnachines, comprising a rigid jaw, an adjustable seat pivoted at one end to the fixed jaw and having rearwardly-extended branches, a swinging jaw pivoted to the fixed jaw and adapted to reciprocate between the said branches of the adj ustable seat, abutments on the swinging jaw for guiding the movement of the adjustable seat and a gripping-plate carried by the swinging jaw, substantially as set forth.
4. A clamp for tentering-niachines,comprising a rigid jaw, an adjustable seat concaved laterally pivoted to the fixedjaw, a swinging jaw pivoted to the fixed jaw and a grippingplate convexed laterally secured to the swinging jaw, substantially as set forth.
