Witnesses Inventor y 1 V I Attorneys GEORGE H. GLENN, OF WELLSVILLE, OHIO.
CLOTHES-LINE HOLDER.
Application filed June 20, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GLENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVellsville, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Clothes-Line Holder, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the present invention 1s to provide, in a clothes line holder, novel means for directing the movement of the l1ne and for clamping the line in any desired posltion.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the type above mentioned, having a novel form of guiding element which constitutes a reinforcement for the body portion of the holder, to enable the same to resist the strain imposed thereon, when the device is in operation.
YVith the foregoing and other objects 1n view, which will appear as the descriptlon proceeds, the invention resldes 1n the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of 1nvention herein disclosed can be made withln the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention In the drawings,Figure 1 shows the 1nvention in top plan; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is an end elevation; Fig. at IS a section on the line 41 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 is a fragmental plan of the body member, a portion of the line gulde being shown in section. Fig. 7 is a plan of the combined eye-forming and reinforcing member.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a body 1 which preferably is a fiat plate of metal, the body 1 being provided with an eye 2 or like suspension means, at one end, the body being diminished in width, as indicated at 3, in its intermediate portion. In that end of the body 1 which is remote from the suspension member 2, there is fashioned a notch at which is most clearly seen in Fi 6.
:1 line clamping mechanism is provided, the same consisting of a pair of cam levers 5 having, at their adjacent ends, upstanding jaws 6, the cam levers 5 being'pivotally connected with the body member 1 by means of pivot elements 7 In the remote ends of the levers 5, openings 8 may be formed, the

oiiice of the openings 8 being to receive jerk lines (not shown), whereby the cam levers 5 may be manipulated.
The invention further includes a combined reinforcing and eyeforming member 9, fashioned from a single rod of metal, bent upon itself to form an eye 9, and to form parallel, contacting arms 9*. The arms, adjacent their free ends are bent sharply, as indicated at 9, and finally, are curved laterally, to form resilient, hookshaped members 9, spaced slightly apart, and cooperating to form a line-receiving eye 9 The arms 9 lie along the under face of the body member 1, and a rivet or the like, indicated at 10, is passed through the eye 9 and through the body member. The bent portion 9 of the member 9 registers in the notch 4 which is formed in the outer end of the member 1, Fig. 6 revealing most clearly the relation between the parts under consideration. Owing to the fact that the member 9 is engaged in the notch 4-, the member will be prevented from swinging t0 and fro with the rivet 10 as a center. The hook-shaped members 9 are inclined in op-- posite directions, and one of them overhangs the body member 1, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby preventing the member 9 from swinging downwardly at its free end. The arms 9 of the member 9, extending along the bottom of the part 1, serve to reinforce the same and to prevent abending and distortion thereof, due to the strains to which devices of this type are of necessity subjected.
In practical operation, the suspension eye 2 is engaged with a support of any sort, the clothes line 12 being thrust between the hook-shaped members 9, to register movably in the eye 9 which is formed by the members 9 As will be understood readily, by manipulating the cam levers 5, the jaws 6 will be made to grip the line 12, and no matter how much tension be placed upon the line, the line cannot be dislodged accidentally from between the jaws.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A clothes line holder comprising a plate provided with an opening; cooperating, line gripping means mounted upon the plate; a reinforcing member extended parallel to one face of the plate and bearing thereagainst, the reinforcing member having one end secured to the plate, the other end of the reinforcing member being extended transversely of the plate and being engaged in the opening, said end of the member terminating in an upstanding, lineguiding eye located between the gripping means; the reinforcing member serving to strengthen the plate and to prevent the plate from bending and rendering the line gripping means immovable.
2. A clothes line holder comprising a plate provided with a notch in one end; a reinforcing member comprising arms extended along one face of the plate and bearing against the same the reinforcing member being provided at one end with an eye, and being provided at the other end with angularly disposed, hook-shaped eye forming members engaged in the notch to hold the reinforcing member against the plate; and a securing element passing through the first specified eye and engaged with the plate; and line gripping means mounted upon the plate; the reinforcing member serving to strengthen the plate and to prevent the same' from bending and rendering the gripping means immovable.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
