HOLDER FOR YARD STICKS.

NITED STATES PATENT JQEEICE..
MAX LEVY, OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND.
HOLDER FoR YARD-STICKS..
SPECIFICATION forming part of -Iietters Patent No. 377,526l dated February 7, 1888.
Serial No. 244,887. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX LEVY, ofNewport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Holders for Yard-Sticks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my improvement is to provide-a holder for supporting a yard-stick near the edge of a sales-counter in position for measuring off goods, whereby the use of the yard-stick is greatly facilitated, while when not in use it can be readily removed ont of the way.
I will iirst describe in detail a yard-stick holder embodying my improvement and then point out the various features of the said improvement in claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
' Figure l is a perspective view illustrating a yard-stick holder embodying my improvement when in use; and Fig. 2 is a Vertical section of the said holder, the yard-stick carried thereby, and the counter to which the holder is attached.
The holder has a U-ciamp, A, by which it' may be detachably secured to the edge of a sales-counter, as shown. Threaded bosses B are here shown on both arms of the clamp A for reception of the pointed set-screw C,which may thus beworked from beneath or above the counter. The upper boss, B, may, however, be omitted and the corresponding arm secured to the counter by means of a simple screw, if desired.
From the yoke D of the U-clamp projects laterally outward a fixed arm, E, to which is hinged to swing vertically a gripper, F, between the jaws F of which the yard-stick G may be held transversely, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The jaw-levers H H are pivoted together by a pin, I, around which is coiled a spring, J, the free ends of which, bearing upon the jaw-levers, tend to hold the jaws F together.
The freejaw-lever H has a thumb-piece, K, .by which it may be vpressed to open the jaw 5o Fandreceive or release the yard-stick, the j avv-lever H being the one hinged directly to' the arm'E.
- A catch, L, is arranged to engage the gripper when the same is raised, as shown in Fig. 1, to hold the yard-stick parallel with .the edge of the counter and in position. for use. The catch here shown consists of afixed springarm, M, fixed to and projecting laterally from the clamp, and having a slot, N, approached on either side by bevels O, so as to automatically engage and lock the jaw-lever H and hold the gripper in an upright position.
By pressing the arm M slightlyoutward the gripper will be releasedand will fall with the yard-stick belowthe level -of the table, so as to be out of the Way when not required for use.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Lett-ers 'Patent- 7c 1. A- holder for yard-sticks, consisting of a U-clamp, an arm projecting laterally from the yoke thereof, and agripper hinged to said arm, substantially as described.
. 2. The combination of a counter, a fixed laterally-projecting arm, E, and a yardstick gripper hinged to swing vertically on and to said arm, substantially as described.
3. In a holder for yard-sticks, the combination of a hinged gripper, a support for the-8o same, and a catch arranged to automatically engage the gripper and hold the same upright, substantially as described.
4. In a holder for yard-sticks, the combination, with the jaw-lever H', of a swinging gripper and a support for said gripper, and a catch therefor consisting of a spring-arm having a slot, N, approached by bevels O, substantially as described. v
MAX LEVY.
