DRAWING INSTRUMENT Antonio Guinez, New York, N. Y., assignor of forty per cent to Joseph Blasig, New York, N. Y.
Application July 30, 1948, Serial N 41,431
This invention relates to drawing instruments and scales used by draftsmen, artists, and the like particularly in connection with drawing boards, and in particular means for resiliently or magnetically holding a triangle, scale, straight edge, or the like in operative position on a drawing board.
The purpose of this invention is to provide mechanical means for adjustably retaining a triangle, straight edge or the like in operative position on a drawing board without using the left hand for this purpose wherein both hands are free.
In general use an artist, draftsman, or the like, who uses his right hand for drawing, holds a T-square, triangle, or the like with his left hand and makes a mark, line, or the like with a pencil or pen in his right hand. The left hand is, therefore, occupied at all times. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a magnet for holding a steel triangle or straight edge to a steel strip at the edge of a board, or a spring clip for holding the triangle or straight edge to the board or the combination of the magnet with the spring clip and a hinge whereby the triangle or straight edge may be adjustably held and at the same time readily moved from one position to another. The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for retaining drawing instruments and the like on a drawing board or flat surface without holding the devices by hand.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for mechanically holding drawing instruments on a board which may be used on boards of different types and sizes.
A further object of the invention is toprovide means for holding triangles, straight edges, scales, transparent sheets and the like to drawing boards which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the new and useful combination, construction, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described, set forth in the claim appended hereto, and disclosed in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure l is a plan view illustrating spring clips holding sheets of transparent material over a scale or edge of a drawing board.
Figure 2 is a cross section through the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a View showing a spring clip holding one scale perpendicular to another.
Figure 4 is a cross section through the device shown in Figure 3.
1 Claim. (01. 334m Figure 5 is a detail illustrating the spring clip shown in Figures 3 and 4.
Figure 6 is a plan view showing a section .of a drawing board with parts broken away showing a hinge held on the edge of a drawing board by a spring clip and a triangle held to the hinge by a magnet.
Figure '7 is a cross section through the device shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a View illustrating a hinge frictionally holding a scale to a straight edge with the hinge held by a spring clip.
Figure 9 is a view showing an end elevation of the device shown in Figure 8.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the spring actuated devices for retaining instruments in position upon a drawing board or the like of this invention includes spring clips [0 and ll, a hinge I2, and a magnet I3.
As illustrated in Figure l the spring clips I0 which have jaws I4 and 15 held by a spring l6, grip a U-shaped sheet ll of clear plastic or other suitable transparent material over a scale l8 hav-- ing a graduated edge [9, and with the parts positioned in this manner the sheets I! may be slid along the scale and used as desired.
In Figures 3, 4 and 5, the spring clip ll, having a base 20 holds a graduated scale 21! over a straight edge 22 with the straight edge positioned on the base and extending under the roll forming the clip, and with the end of the scale 2| also extending under the roll and positioned upon the straight edge. With the parts arranged in this manner the scale may readily be slid along the straight edge and used in any position desired, and the parts may be used as a T-square or other drawing instrument.
In the design shown in Figures 6 and I the hinge l2 which is provided with plates 23 and 24 is clamped to the edge of a board 25 with a spring clip 26 having jaws 21 and 28 held by a spring 29 and provided with suitable handles, and a triangle 32 is held in position upon the board by the magnet l3. The hinge and triangle are formed of material having magnetic attraction, and it will be understood that the hinge and triangle may be of any suitable type or design. The triangle which is usually held against a T-square or straight edge by hand is, therefore, retained in position by the magnet and hinge so that both hands are free.
In Figures 8 and 9 the plates of the hinge are clamped over a straight edge or bar providing a head 33 and the end of a straight edge providing a tongue 34 by a spring clip 35 and with the parts arranged in this manner the tongue may be slid along the head and used as desired.
A straight edge or scale or a spring clip of any suitable type or design may be used and the different elements may be combined as desired.
It will be understood that other modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
In a T-square, the combination whichcomprises a bar providing a head, a straight edge providing a tongue positioned on the head and extended outwardly therefrom, a hinge having hinge plates extended therefrom positioned with one of said hinge plates extended below the head and the other on the end of the tongue positioned on the head, and a cylindrical spring having a slot in one side positioned over the hinge with the plates of the hinge extended through the a said slot whereby the cylindrical spring clamps the tongue to the head.
