PAD HOLDER .ANDv RULEB.
Application led October 3, 1927. Serial No. 223,586.
This invention relates to a pad holder and ruler and especially to improvements on the structure shown in my former patent entitled Holder and rulln device for tablets, No. 1,600,545 issued eptember 21, 1926.
The object of the present invention is to generally improve and simpli the construction and o eration of dev1ces of the character descri ed, and especially to provide a device of this character which may be readily attached to writing pads, tablets, etc. for use in offices, schools etc., so as to be of assistance in ruling paper as well as forming a scale and guide in making drawings as in Working trigonometrical or geometrical problems and the like.
The invention, briefly stated, comprises an upper and a lower clamping bar between which a pad or the like 1s adapted to be clamped. It further consists in forming a special form of guide on the upper clamping bar and in providing a T-square which is adapted to be guided and retained by the guide so that the T-square may be moved .transversely of the pad. The invention further embodies details of construction which, together with the above features will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a pers ective view of the pad holder and ruling evice, said view showing a pad clam d and held in position with relation to t e T-square,
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line II--II, Fig. l,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper end of the T-square.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 2 and 3 indicate lower and upper bars respectively which are adapted to engave and clamp the opposite sides of a pad older generally indicated at 4. -Threaded bolts 5 secured to the lower bar pass through perforations formed in the opposite ends of the upper bar 3 and when nuts 6 are applied, the holder 4 will be clamped and rigidly secured. A pad or several sheets of paper, such as indicated at 7, can be placed .on top of the pad holder and passed under the bar 3 and as such will be secured, togather with the pad holder, between the bars 2 and 3. The u per longitudinal edge of the bar 3 is curle over or bent to form a tube 8 which extends from end to end. A slot 9 is formed in this tube and a ruler cr T-square 10 extends through the slot and 1s slidable therein transversely of the pad. The T-square is provided with a head memb er 1n the form of a rod 11, this rod being riveted, welded or otherwise secured to the square 10, the rod 11 together with the tube 8 serving the function of guiding and securing t e square 10 during its movements transversely of the pad, the movement of the T-square being limited by the nuts and bolts 5 as shown. may be used as an oiice appliance but is particularly adapted for school work, such as ruling sheets of paper or for makin drawings, for instance in connection wit geometrical .or trigonometricalA problems and the like.
The device as a whole is a sim lied or improved form of construction w en compar1son ismade with the device shown in my former patent already referred to. It can be applied to ordinary writin tablets pads and the like, and the use o the pad iolder 4 as such is not an essential feature, the pad holder being merely employed when loose sheets of paper are applied as shown in Fig. 1. The square 10 and the lower edge of the clamping bar 3 may be provided with graduated scales so that scale drawings or definitely spaced lines may be ruled oil' on the pad or sheets. A spring pencil clamp such as indicated at 12 may also be employed and complete equipment is thus provided for school work of the character described.
While certain features of the present invention are more or less s ecilically described, I wish it understood) that various changes may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims. Similarly, that the materials and linishes of the several parts employed may be such ,as themanufacturer may decide or varying conditions or uses may demand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising` an Iupper and a' lower bar, clamping means cooperating therewith to retain and secure a pad between the bars, a slotted tubular shaped guide member on the upper bar and extending substantiall from end to end thereof, and a T-square having a head member formed thereon which is slidable in the slotted guide to permit trans The device illustrated i `Versel'movement of the T-Square with re- .npper bur being curled over along' one edge to form a slotted guide tube which extends from end to end 'of-the bar and sndnpper bar being also perforated :1t opposite ends, a pair of clamping bolts secured to the lower bar and extending through the end l0 the slot and movable with the rod transl5 versely of the pad.
