Description

' (No Model.)
s. ERNST. CLOTHES PIN.
Patented Sept. 8, 1896.
m: norms warms co.. PNOTO-LITHQ, WASHINGTON- u. c.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL ERNST, OF GLEN ELDER, KANSAS.
CLOTHES-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,537, dated September 8, 1896.
Application filed March 4, 1896. Serial No. 581,763. (No model.)
To all whom 131% may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ERNST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glen Elder, in the county of Mitchell and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olothes=Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and designed to be forced between the parts near the pivot to press the clamping-jaws toward each other, the cam being mounted upon a pin held in one of the arms and adapted to slide through an opening in the other arm.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims. The invention in this instance resides in the peculiar construction and the combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is an elevation of my improved pin. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the same in line with the pin on which the cam is mounted.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one of the arms, and B the other. They are alike in form and construction, being shaped at one end to form the jaw a ,and the other end tapered or beveled upon its inner face, as seen at 17. Between their ends the arms are pivotally connected together in any suitable manner, in'this instance shown as pivoted upon the bolt or pin 0, which has its ends formed with eyes or loops 0, which are located in recesses in the arms, and the pins D passed through the arms at right angles thereto and in the eyes of the said pin 0, although other means of pivotally connecting the arms maybe employed, such, for instance, as a nail with a head on one side and a washer on the other, the nail being riveted over the washer.
E is a pin held at one end in one of the arms at the end opposite the clamping portion, and this pin is designed to work loosely through an opening F in the adjacent end of the otherarm, as shown, and a hole through the upper end of one arm to admit a wire or string, so that the pin can be used for other purposes, such as for holding lap-robes, pillow-shams, and the like. Upon this pin E is loosely mounted a cam G, which is designed to be rotated upon the pin, the cam being in the form of a disk, the opposite faces of which are cam-shaped or oppositely beveled, so that when the cam is turned in one direction the thin portion thereof will lie between the adjacent faces of the arms, and the latter free to be moved on their pivot to receive between their clamping ends the clothes or other article it is desired to grasp or hold therein, and then by rotating the cam the thicker portion is brought between the ends of the arms and the clamping ends thus forced together to tightly clamp the article therebetween and there held. The cam may be provided with a projecting portion f to form a handle, by which it may be easily manipulated, if desired.
Modifications in details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is 1. A clothes-pin consisting of two-arms pivotally connected together, and a cam rotatably mounted between the ends of the said arms on a support held in the end of one arm and movable in the other arm and provided with a projection serving as a handle, substantially as specified.
2. The pin described consisting of the two In testimony whereof I have signed this arms pivotally connected together between specification in the presence of two subscribtheir ends, a pin held in the end of one of ing Witnesses.
said arms and Working through an opening SAMUEL ERNST. 5 in the other arm, and a cam loosely mounted WVitnesses:
for rotation on said pin, substantially as and A. G. MEAD,
for the purpose specified. AUGUST KELLER.
