Description

PATENTED APR. 24, 1906.
W. R. CALVERT.
GOODS HANDLER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 2a. 1905.
R E w MR R E m WITNESSE:
ATTORNEYS WALTER R. CALVERT, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
GOODS-HANDLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
E'atentecl April 24, 1906.
Application filed September 28, 1905. Serial No. 280,537.
1'0 (11/ 'llfhcm/ if 'III/II/Z/ concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER R. CALVERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goods- Handlers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in goodshandlers; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved goods-handler. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the upper end of the same, and Fig. 5 is a view looking at the upper end.
In the practical application of my invention I provide a tube A, having on the upper end thereof a vertical slot a and adjacent to the lower end thereof a transverse slot a. A grip u" is connected to the lower end of the tube, and adjacent to the inner end of the transverse slot is provided a lug a, secured to the tube in any suitable manner. A grippingjaw o is attached to the inner face of the tube at the upper end thereof, the jaw projecting outwardly through the slot at right angles to the longitudinal center of the tube and having drawn thereover a section of rub ber tubing (1 to prevent abrasion of the ob ject grasped by the jaws. A rod B is arranged within the tube, the rod having at either end enlargements b I), the said enlargements being of a diameter equal to the internal diameter of the tube and fitting snugly therein. The enlargement at the upper end of the tube is provided with a bevelsurface I)", and upon the bevel-surface is secured at gripping-jaw If for coacting with the gripping-j aw a, the said jaw being likewise provided with a section of rubber tubing b" thereon. A spring b encircles the upper end of the tube, one of the ends of the spring being secured to a pin b on the tube and the other end engaging the gripping-j aw b, the spring normally maintaining the jaws in contact with each other. A lug b, attached to the enlargement at the lower end of the rod, projects through the transverse slot for convenience in manipulating the rod.
The operation of my improvement will be readily understood from the description. By means of the lug b the jaws may be opened and the article grasped therebetween, after which the lug is released, the spring maintaining a firm grip of the jaws upon the article.
In practice the lug b may be manipulated by the thumb, while the forefinger would en gage the lug (15 to prevent rotation of the tube with respect to the hand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a goods-handler, the combination of a tube having a longitudinal slot at its upper end, and a transverse slot near its lower end, a grip secured to the tube, a gripping-j aw secured within the tube on one side of the vertical slot and projecting laterally from the tube, a laterally-projecting lug secured to the tube adjacent to the transverse slot, a rod within the tube having its ends enlarged to lit the same and having the enlargement at its upper end beveled, a thumb-piece secured to the enlargement at the lower end and projecting through the transverse slot, a gripping-j aw secured to the bevel-surface of the upper enlargement and projecting through the longitudinal slot for coacting with the first-named aw, a spring secured at one end to the tube and at the other to the grippingjaw on the rod for normally maintaining the jaws in contact with each other, and sections of rubber tubing upon the gripping-jaws.
2. In a goods-handler, and in combination, a tube having a gripping-j aw secured to the upper end thereof, a lug near the lower end of the tube, a grip on the lower end of the tube, a rod mounted for oscillation within the tube, a lug on the rod projecting through an opening in the casing adjacent the first-named lug, a gripping-j aw on the upper end of the rod projecting through an opening in the tube adjacent to the first gripping-jaw and cooperating therewith, and a spring for normally maintaining the jaws in contact with each other.
3. In a goods-hamllcr, and in combination, a tube having a gripping-j aw at one end and a grip attached to the other end, a rod within the tube having a gripping-j aw for coacting with the gripping-j aw on the tube, an elastic facing on the adjacent surfaces of the gripping-jaws, a spring for normally maintaining the aws in contact, and means adjacent the grip whereby to rotate the rod to open the aws.
4. In a goods-handler and in combination,
a tube and a gripping-jaw attached to one end of the tube, a grip attached to the other end of the tube, a rod within the tube, a grippingjaw on the rod for coacting with the gripping-jaw 011 the tube, means for normally maintaining the jaws in contact with each other, and means adjacent to the grip whereby to rock the rod to open the jaws.
5. In a good-handler and in combination, a tube provided at one end with a grippingjaw, a rod within the tube provided with a gripping-j aw for coacting with the grippingjaw on the tube, means for normally maintaining the jaws in contact, and means at the opposite end of the tube whereby to rock the rod to open the jaws.
6. In a goodshandler, and in combination, a tube provided at one end with a grippingjaw, a rod within the tube having a grippingjaw for coacting with the gripping-j aw on the tube, and means at the opposite end of the tube whereby to partially rotate the rod to open the jaws.
7. In a goods-handler, and in combination, a tube having a gripping-'jaw at one end thereof, a rod within the tube having a gripping-j aw for coacting with the gripping-jaw of the tube, and means whereby to rock the rod to open the jaws.
8. In a goods-handler and in combination, a tube, a grip on one end of the tube, a rod within the tube, coacting gripping-jaws on the rod and the tube on the opposite end of the tube from the grip, and means adjacent to the grip whereby to rock the rod to open and close the jaws.
9. In a goods-handler and in combination, a tube, a rod within the tube, coacting gripping-j aws on the rod and the tube, and means whereby to rock the rod to open and close the jaws.
