' PUMP ROD E'LBVATOR. No.Y 578,339. YP'atented Mar. 9, 1897.

OTHELLO W. KING, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUMP-ROD ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 578,339, dated March 9, 1897.
Application led T une 6 1896. Serial No. 594,563. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OTHELLO W. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Rod Elevators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for raising pump-rods from oil-wells and the like; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap device whereby the rod may be elevated.
Other objects and advantages of the invenappear, and the novel be particularly pointed out in the appended clalms.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon', form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a View showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views. p
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one of the jaws, which is extended to form a handle A and is bifurcated, as at a, for the reception of the other jaw B, which is extended to form ahandle B', the two being pivotally connected together on'a pivot or rod C. Each of the jaws is extended, so that when closed they form substantially avU-shaped opening, the ends of the jaws being formed with eyes D, into which are received the pins or bolts E, which are threaded into the clamps F F. These clamps are pivotally connected by a pivot G,
which passes through the bifurcated portion fof the one jaw and the portion f of the other which is inserted in said bifurcation, and this has a lug H projecting therefrom.
. The centers of these jaws are formed with `openings la, so that when the jaws are closed 5o they form a rectangular opening into which the pump-rod is received. The jaw f has a 'without departing lug I extending therefrom which enters a recess I' in the opposite jaw.
The jaws A and B are each formed with a strip or plate J which extends over the clamps, as seen, and guides the same and prevents the upward movement thereof.
Near the outer end of the handle A of the jaw A is a link L, pivotally mounted thereon, as at Z, and adapted to embrace the handle B when the clamp is closed. On the outer end of the handle A is swiveled a swivel M.
The operation will be apparent. The handle B is turned so as to open the clamps, and the latter meet and embrace the pump-rod. Then ihe handles are brought together and the link L engaged over the outer end of the handle B', which firmly holds the two jaws together and prevents displacement of the pump-rod, which can be readily raised by means of the device. The lug or projection H on the hinge of the clamps is for forcing oif the pump-rod.
Modiiications in details may be resorted to from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A pump-rod extractor or elevator comprising jaws pivotally mounted together and formed with handles, and clamps pivotally connected together and pivotally mounted in the jaws, and the latter having portions overlapping the clamps, substantially as described.
2. A pump-rod extractor or elevator comprising jaws formed with handles, and clamps pivotally connected together and pivotally mounted in the jaws, and the latter having portions overlapping the clamps, and a' link pivotally mounted on one handle to engage the other, substantially as described.
3. A pump-rod extractor or elevator comprising jaws'pivotally mounted together and formed with handles, and clamps connected together and pivotally mounted in the jaws, and the latter having portions overlapping the clamps, and a link pivotally mounted on one handle to engage the other, and one of the handles provided with a swivel, substantially as described.
