DEVICE FOR HOLDING OR RETAINING LADIES HAIR.

Be it known that I, ANDREAS STooKINenR, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, and a resident of the city of Vienna, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding or Betaining Ladies Hair, of which the following is a specification.

The invention has been patented in Austria, No. /957, dated March-21, 1895; in Hungary, No. 1,969, dated January 13, 1895; in Great Britain, No. 1,815, dated January 25, 1895; in France, No. 244,594, dated January 24, 1895, and in Italy, No. 74/440, dated March 31, 1895.

My invention relates to an improved devicefor holding or retaining ladies hair.

In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I will now describe the same withreference to the accompanying drawings, which show various constructional forms of my improved device.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the device; Fig. 2, a similar view of a modification; Fig. 3, a side view of a modification in which a fastening-pin is used; Fig. 4, an

My improved device comprises two jaws a a, jointed together and having comb-shaped teeth a on the sides turned toward each other. Arms 1) are provided either on the jaws themselves, Figs. 1 to 4, or on a ring A, carrying the, jaws, Fig. 5. The jaws are opened for placing the hair between them. Then they are closed and the lock of hair thus held is wound around the arms bin any desired manner. Various means for locking the jaws when closed may be adopted.

In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the jaws a. CL are held bya ring or clamp e, which is placed over the parts or wings I) b of the jaws, the said parts I) b having teeth 61, with which the ring 6 engages, thereby preventing the accidental opening of the jaws. The said teeth cl may also be cut obliquely to form parts of a screw-thread, while the ring 6 is provided interiorly with a corresponding female thread, so that the ring may be screwed up and down on the wings.

In the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 2 the jaws are held together by a pin 9, secured to the hinge or pivot of the jaws and adapted to pass into holes in spring projections ff, fixed to the wings I) b of the jaws a a, the said spring projections being pressed up to enable the jaws to be opened and thus allowed to spring back onto thepin g on closing the jaws. I may also pass a pin h through the holes in the projections f f in order to hold the jaws closed, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, Fig. 4 being a side elevation of Fig. 3.

The hereinbefore-described locking devices enable the size of the opening between the jaws a a to be adjusted at will-for example, by screwing or placing the ring or clamp 6 higher or lower on the parts 1) 12 as shown in Fig. 1, or by suitably choosing the holes in theparts ff, through which the pin g or h is passed, Fig. 2 or Figs. 3 and 4.

In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 the locking of the jaws is effected by the wings b 19 which are arranged at the upper ends of the jaws a a, the wings b 19 being elastic or springy and so shaped that they may be caused to engage with each other, as shown.

I claim 1. In combination, a pair of jaws pivotally connected and having teeth, and having also extensions one of which is hooked about the other, said other extension forming a radial arm about which the hair may be wound, and the arms extending radially from the jaws and in substantially the same plane with said jaws and the teeth thereof, substantially as described.

2. A retaining device for the hair comprising toothed members, a series of arms radially arranged relative to the central portion of the toothed jaws, the said jaws having extensions arranged adjacent to each other to form the clamping means, the said radial arms and extensions presenting a body of substantially circular form, that is in which the ends of the radial arms and extensions are substantially the same distance from the center of the device, substantially as described.
