LEWIS E. TORBEY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
SUSPENSION DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. t5,
Application filed June 2, 1916. Serial No. 101,330.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS H. Tommy, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Suspension Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a suspension device comprising two pivoted arms or members forming, when closed together, a twopart separable ring having an integral tang with which a holding device, consisting preferably of a loop or cap, forming a part of the suspension device, has a swiveled connection. The loop or cap is preferably adapted to hold a flexible razor strop, or a swing strop, either side of which may be brought into position for use by turning the loop or cap on its swivel. The two arms or members forming the separable ring are preferably stamped from sheet metal, so that the device may be manufactured at little cost, and the tang to which the stropholdingloop or other suspending member is swiveled is formed integral with one of said arms or members, said tang being slightly upset at its end in forming the swivel for the attachment of the strop-holding loop or cap. The overlapping free ends of the arms or members constituting the separable ring are slightly offset in opposite directions to an extent preferably a little less than their thickness, so thatwhen closed together they will have such considerable frictional contact with each other as will prevent the ring from being accidentally opened.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of the invention with the arms or members constituting the two-part ring closed together. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the arms partly open. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the ring looking from the top of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but with the arms constituting the ring partly open so that their ends are in contact. Fig. 5 is a. view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the separable ring attached to a stop-holding cap.
Referring to the drawing, 12 and 13 denote two arms or members connected together by a pivot-pin or rivet 14, said connected arms or members constituting a twopart separable ring. The arm 13 is provided with an integral tang 15 with which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a loop 16 has a swiveled connection by upsetting or riveting the said tang after it has been passed through a hole in the top of the loop. The arms or members 13 and 14, which when closed together form the separable ring, are preferably stamped from sheet metal, and the overlapping parts of said arms or members are oppositely bent so as to be slightly offset from each other, preferably to an extent a little less than their thickness, so that when they are closed together they will have a strong frictional contact which will prevent them from being accidentally opened, and when they are fully closed together the ends of said arms abut against shoulders 17 formed by offsetting said arms.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 the two-part separable ring is shown as having a swiveled connection, by means of the tang 15, with a suspending member consisting of a clamping strop-holding cap 16*.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the improved suspension device, consisting of only four parts, including the pivot pin or rivet, may be manufactured at little cost, while it is very convenient and eflicient in use.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A suspension device consisting of two curved sheet-metal arms or members pivotally attached together to form a separable ring. one of said arms or members having an integral tang constructed to form a swivel, in combination with a suspending member having a swiveled connection with said tang, said arms or members having oppositely bent, ofi'set overlapping parts which are so disposed that they bear against each other frictionally when the ring is closed.
In testimony whereof l aflix mv signature.
LEWIS H. T ORREY.
