- DEVICE FOR HANGING GARMENTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,600, dated September 3, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BERNARD LIPSOHITZ, of East Albany, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Garment-Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for hanging up clothing; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, efiective, and reliable device for the pu rpose named. This object I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same at the line X X; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the blank for forming the hook by which the device is hung in place.

As represented in the drawings, A designates the body of my device, which is made of wood or other suitable material, preferably made in the form of a bow whose opposite ends are curved oppositely to the central part of said body; but said body may be made straight or of any other suitable form when preferred. I

B is a wire or bar having the form of the lower side of the body A and having at each end an upwardly-turned point 1, which engages in a corresponding hole in the lower side of the body A, said wire forming a slide on Which grippers O are fitted to move to adjust them at a proper distance apart for holding a garment that is to be suspended from my device. The grippers G are preferably made of sheet metal havingsufficient elasticity to resume its normal position when Said grippers are formed from a single piece of sheet metal bent to form an eye 2, which will slide loosely on the rod B when not cramped thereon by swinging them out of their natural position.

The two ends of the sheet metal are bent toform jaws 3, which may be serrated to afford a better hold of a garment that has its upper end inserted between the jaws 3. A sliding clip 4 is fitted to slide on the grippers O in such manner that the jaws 3 will thereby be moved to approach each other sufliciently close to tenaciously hold a gar'ment'that is placed betweenthem. By an upward move? ment of the clip 4 the jaws 3 will be freed and the resilience of the metal will cause said jaws to recede from each other and thereby release the garment from their hold.

D is a hook by which my device can be suspended when in use. Said hook is formed from a wire body which will slide loosely through a central opening 7, formed vertically through the middle of the body A, and has an eye 5, formed on its lower end, said eye being adapted'to allow the bar B to pass loosely therethrough. The hook D has a body 6 that is first made straight, as shown in Fig. 3, to adapt it for passing through an opening '7, formed centrally in the body A for the purpose of receiving it, and after said wire body is inserted in said opening the hook D is formedon the upper end'ot' it, as shown in Fig. 1. The body A being bored to receive the points 1 and body 6, the bar B, having the grippers C and the blank for the hook D strung thereon, is fixed in place in the body A by driving the points 1 into the holes prepared to receive them. Then, after forming the hook D from the body 6, the device is ready for use. By making the central open ing 7 sufficiently large to permit the straight portion of the wire body 6 to slide loosely through said opening, provision is made to permit the stem of the hook D to have a slight vertical movement through the body A, and by passing the wire B through the eye of said hook ample support is given to the wire B, without interfering with the vertical move ment of said hook, to enable the device to carry much greater weight than such devices are usually capable of, thereby increasing its efficiency without increasing its cost.

My invention is operated in the following manner: The grippers 0 being adjusted about equidistantly from the hook D at a proper distance apart to receive the garment that is to be suspended thereby, the upper edge of the garment is inserted between the jaws 3 of said grippers, the sliding clips 4. are successively slid down to close the'jaws' 3 tightly upon the garment, and when the latter is accomplished the garment will be. grasped by said jaws with sufficient tenacity to enable the device to sustain the weight of the garment. movable grippers, C, arranged to slide on said bar, and a hook, D, whose straight stem is fitted to slide loosely through the central opening 7; the lower end of said stem having an eye, 5, that encircles the bar B, as and for the 2c purpose specified.
