HENRY C. ZENKE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PLACKET-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,354, datedJ'une 29, 1897. 1 Application filed July 1, 1896. Serial No. 597,779. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. ZENKE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Placket-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to ladies skirts; and its object is to provide a new and improved placket-fastener arranged to keep the placket closed during the time the skirt is worn.
The invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
- out.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied and with part broken Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the same in an open position and with parts broken out. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of the same in a closed position and with parts broken out. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of thesame on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
The body A of the skirt is provided with the usual waistband A, in the ends of which are secured the flanges B and O, projecting from the upper ends of the flexible bands 13' and O, respectively held in the overlapping placket-facings A and A of the body A.
On the flange B is formed a forwardly-projecting hook 15*, adapted to be engaged by an eye or opening 0 formed in the other flange C, so that the two flanges can be hooked together to close the waistband A" and the placket by bringing the facings A and A one over the other.
On the lower end of the band B is formed a guideway B in which is fitted to slide loosely the lower end of the other band 0, the said guideway being secured in the joint of the facings, and the said lower end of the band 0 extends through its facing into the said guideway, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 4. Now by this arrangement the skirt can be readily opened when putting the dress on or off, and by connecting the eye 0 with the hook B the waistband is closed at its ends, and the two facings are held firmly one over the other by the bands 13 and 0, made of steel or like flexible material.
Now it will be seen that when the dress is worn it is impossible for the placket to accidentally open, owing to the steel band in the facings, and the said placket is kept closed when the dress is lifted and drawn to one side, as the flexible bands will yield in any direc tion to the side and if necessary to form a twist without causing the facings to draw apart and open, as is so frequently the case with skirts as now constructed.
It is understood that the hook B extends to the outside of the waistband material and an opening is cut in the waistband material to permit the hook B to engage the eye C in the band 0. The lower end of the band C is free to slide in the guideway B so that the said band will readily accommodate itself to the curvature of the band B whenever a portion of the dress is lifted, the said band also readily accommodating itself to the folds in the skirt and to the shape of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A device of the class described, consisting of two flexible bands adapted to be held in the placket-facings of a skirt, one band being provided at its lower end with a guideway to receive the lower end of the other band, and each band provided at its upper end with a flange to fit in the waistband, one of said flanges being provided with a hook and the other with an eye to receive the hook, substantially as described.
HENRY O. ZENKE.
