NITED STATES ATENT T FFroE.
EDMUND BARTON WHITNEY, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,938, dated March 2, 1897.
Application filed November 24,1896. Serial No. 613,352. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND BARTONWHIT- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the manufacture of gloves and mittens; and my object is to avoid the usual waste of material removed from the palm portion for the insertion of the thumbpiece by utilizing this material for reinforcing the thumb-piece where it is sewed in said palm portion.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View of a portion of a glovepalm in proximity to the thumb, the thumb being shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a similar view in plan; and Fig. 3 is a detail of the slit for the reception of the thumb, shown in connection with a separate piece.
In the drawings, 1 represents a portion of a glove-palm having out therein a slit 2 in the form of a compound curve, or S-shaped, as shown plainly in Fig. 3. Two flaps 3 and 4 are thus formed, which are adapted to be turned up at right angles when the slit is opened for the insertion of the thumb-piece 5. This thumb-piece is sewed in the palm as in the ordinary glove, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The flaps 3 4, which when the slit is opened assume substantially diametrically opposite positions, are then sewed to the thumb-piece 5.
I am aware that it is not new to slit the palm of the glove for the insertion of the thumb piece and to utilize the flap thus formed for a reinforcing-piece; but in such cases, prior to my invention, a part of the palm portion is always removed or the thumbpiece is reinforced on one side only, but by my arrangement every particle of the material is used to strengthen the thumb and the reinforcements are placed to the best advantage.
This invention may be utilized in connection with an ordinary glove where an independent reinforcing-piece is desirable. This construction is illustrated in Fig. 3, in which a represents an oval piece of material having a central S-shaped slit cut therein. This piece is adapted to be placed around the thumb of the glove of ordinary make, the thumb entering the slit and having the flaps b sewed on opposite sides thereof, as before described.
I claim as my invention An improved article of manufacture comprising a glove or mitten having a thumb, an S-shaped slit, reinforcing-flaps turned up from said slit and secured to opposite sides of said thumb, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
E. BARTON WHITNEY.
