IMPROVEMENT IN NHTTENS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,464, dated March 2, 1875; application led December 12, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osEPH H. PEABODY, of Pittsford, in the county of Itutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Mittens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construetion and operation oi the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l ofthe drawing is a representation of a plan View of my mitten. Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal sectional views of the same.

Fig. 4 is an inside view of the same; and Fig. 5 an outside View. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views.

This invention has relation to the manufacture of mittens for the hands; and Vmy object is to save stock in cutting out mittens, at the same time to make a more. serviceable and better-titting article than has hitherto been introduced, as will be hereinafter explained.

In the annexed drawings, A designates the back of the mitten; B, the lining; and O, a thumb-piece, which forms a part of the lining. These pieces may be made of leather, having the wool on one side, which side, in the mitten, will be next the hand or inside. The piece A in the mitten is out so as to leave a curve, commencing at the point c and terminating at the point a', leaving a portion of the thumb-piece O on the part B. From the point al to a2 an angular cutis made, (shown in Fig. 1,) and from the point a to the point a3 a straight cut is made, which, with the cuts above named, separate the parts A and B.

A ap is then cut in the piece B of the form shown, which, when turned over, as shown in Fig. 2, constitutes a lining for part of the thumb of the mitten. In cutting the flap or thumb-piece C, and in rounding the finger end of the piece B, a 1iap,A/, is formed, which carries the lining and the seam over the fore finger back of the place where the mitten is exposed to the Y greatest wear. The piece A has its rounded finger end, its curve from a to al, angular edge from a1 to a2, and straight edge from a to a3. The opposite edge of piece A corresponds to the curve on the outer edge ofthe piece B, as shown in Fig. 1. rlFhe facing-piece E, which is shown in Fig. 5, is an exact counterpart of the lining B, and in the mitten complete-ly covers this lining. F designates the piece which forms the back ofthe thumb and the lining for the palmer side of the thumb. The facing for the palmer side ot the thumb is formed out of the facing-piece for the palm of the hand; also of a separate piece, G, (shown in Figs. 5 and 6,) and corresponding in its shape to nearly one-half ot' the piece F.

The facingpieces are made of some stout and durable material, and those pieces which are not exposed to so much wear may be made of a material which is less durable.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A mitten composed of pieces A B O F in combination with facing-pieces E G r, all cut and united as described and shown.
