UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. MCINTIRE, OF SOUTH NORRIDGEVVOCK, MAINE.
CHECKRElN-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,905, dated December 8, 1896. Application filed July 18, 1896. Serial No. 599,682. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. MCINTIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Norridgewock, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check rein-Hooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
My invention has relation to checkreinhooks for harness, and the object is to provide a simple and convenient checkrein-hook secured to the saddle by which the checkrein can be loosened to Water the horse and instantly secured in place when desired; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The figure in the drawing is a perspective View of a checkrein-hook embodying my invention.
A represents the ordinary form of checkrein-hook, the base B of which forms a plate by means of which the hook is secured to the harness-saddle.
C is a U-shaped spring, one end of which is secured to the hook by rivets c c, the upper or free end being provided with ears D, between which is j'ournaled a roller E, the pressure of the spring 0 serving to keep the roller in contact with the inner face of the end of the hook at all times, except when the checkrein is being released or replaced, at which time, of course, the roller gives way by the spring action and immediately flies back into place.
face of the spring, so that should it become necessary to increase or diminish the tension of the spring this can be instantly done by means of the thumb-screw drawing the block closer into the bend to increase the tension and reversing the operation to lessen the tenslon.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a' checkrein-hook comprising the rigid hook A provided with a U-shaped spring G, the free end of which is provided with ears 1) between which is journaled a roller E, in con1- bination with the block F, and thumb-screw H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a checkrein-hook comprising the rigid hook A having the U -shaped spring 0, having ears D, between which is journaled the roller E, in combination with the block F, the curved face G of which is of a greater circle than the bend in the spring, and adjustable with reference to said bend in the spring by means of the thumb-screw H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. MOINTIRE.
