UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK o. MGKIBBEN, F AUGUSTA, KENTUCKY.
' OVERDRAW CHECK-REINATTACHMENT FOR BRIDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,105, dated October 11, 1881.
Application filed March 30, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK O.MoK1BBEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at A11- gusta, in the county of Bracken and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overdraw Check-Rein Attachments for Bridles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use-the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved overdraw check-rein attachment for bridles. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of a roll adapted for a round rein, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line :0 w of Fig. 1.
This invention relates to improvements in Y overdraw check-rein attachments for bridles,
havingforitsobjectto dispense with the leather loop heretofore used among other mediums for that purpose, to lessen friction and wear, to more evenly or properly guide the check-n in, to ease the pull upon the horse, and to serve at the same time asan ornament; and it consists of an upright frame adapted to be connected to the bridle crown-piece, and having guiding-grooves in its inner sides, coinbined with rolls and a bow or yoke adapted to work in the grooves in the frame, and a spring holding the rolls under a suitable pressure, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates an upright frame of metal, preferably consisting of the lower or greater section, a, with the screw-stud a to enable it to be connected to the bridle crown-piece, and of the upper curved section, a detachably or 0therwise connected to the section a, and ornamented, if desired. The upper section is shown connected to the lower section by screws to permit of the taking apart of these for the intro (N0 model.)
resting against the under side of the upper I end of the frame, and its lower end bearing upon the yoke or how 1), with its ends adapted to bear upon the axes of the upper roll, as clearly seen in Fig. 1, thus transferring the pressure to the rolls. This spring acts with suljjcient pressure to cause the rolls to always bear upon the overdraw-rein, and by its being in contact with the rolling surface of the rolls friction is lessened, wear diminisheth ease of pull upon the horse obtained, While by the frame itself the rein is guided more evenly, the ordinary leather loop heretofore used, among other means, for that purpose is dispensed with, and it at the same time serves as .an ornament.
To adapt the device for using a round strap or rein a roll, B, as shown in Fig. 2, with an annular groove or concavity in its middle, is substituted for one of the rolls B.
Having thus fullydescribed myinvention, I claim and desire to secure byLetters Patent- In an overdraw check-rein attachment for hridles, the combination, with the frame A, having grooves I) b in its inner sides, of the rolls B, with their axes resting in said grooves, the bow, or yoke D, and spring 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK o. MoKIBBEN.
