Description

(No Model.) 7
NE T? M, f1 2??? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL E. HARSH, OF VVABASH, INDIANA.
SHAFT-TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 372,973, dated November 8, 1887. Application filed March 10, 1887. Serial No. 231,577. (No model.)
' with a rigid frame or casting, of a looped strap for securing the shafts against upward move ment.
The invention further consists in the combination, with a rigid frame, of a yielding cushion or bearing, upon which the shaft rests,
and an independent looped strap for preventing undue upward movement of the shaft.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved shaft-holder applied to a shaft. Fig. 2 is a side View, partly in section; and Fig. 3 shows in perspective a part of the rigid frame with its yielding seat or bearing-surface.
A represents a frame or casting approximately semicircular in form, and having end loops, at a, and a central depending guardloop, a. This frame A is grooved or recessed on both its concave and convex surfaces to receive a band or filling, B, of leather or other soft material. I preferably employ a short strip, which'is passed completely around the frame, having its ends overlapped and secured in a suitable manner.
The leatherB forms a yielding seat or hearing for the shaft 0.
D represents a strap secured at one end, d, to one of the ends of the frame. The strap is then passed upward, and then through the other end loop of the frame and lapped upon itself, the free end (1 being provided with a buckle, (Z adapted to engage a strap, E, depending from the harness-saddle.
F represents a strap, which passes around the frame A, and is secured to itself below the frame at the point e,to form a loop, F, through which the shaft passes. The depending endf of the strap F is adapted for attachment to the belly-band of the harness.
It will be apparent that I thus provide a soft bearingsurface for the shaft, which surface may be readily renewed, and also prevent, by means of the looped strap F, all undue upward play of the shaft within its holder.
Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a frame or casting provided with end loops, and having a bearing-surface for the shaft of leather or other yielding material, of a looped strap held within the frame to hold the shaft against upward movement in the frame and astrap for securing the frame to the saddle, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a bearing loop or frame provided with a yielding bearing-surface, of a strap for securing the frame to the saddle of the harness and a looped strap held within the frame for securing the shaft to the belly-band to prevent undue upward play, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
