JOSEPH G. WEAVER, OF ZANESVILLE, INDIANA.
CONNECTOR FOR CHOKE-STRAPS AND BREECHlNG-STRAPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631 ,731 dated August 22, 1899.
Application filed March 25, 1899. Serial No. 710,425. N0 model-3 A To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH C. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zanesville, in the county of Allen, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the inventiou, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harness attachments.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple, convenient, and economical harness attachment specially designed to be employed upon draft-harness, adapted to obviate or relieve the. chafing and wearing friction of the harness-breeching upon the draftanimals hips, which friction wears ofi the hair of the hips in awell-understood manner, thereby disfiguring the animal and causing unnecessary discomfort.
Another object of my improvement is to equalize and make easier the weight of the load in going downhill.
A still further object is to providea means for so connecting the breeching with the girth as to prevent the draft-animal from getting one of his rear feet over the quarter-strap in striking at flies in a well-understood manner.
My invention comprises a circular pad of leather or other suitable material, a rigid metallic bar pivotally mounted midway its ends upon said pad, preferably at the center thereof, and provided at its opposite ends with suitable slots or openings, in which the forward ends of the quarter-straps are secured, and a forwardly-projecting metallic strap or clevis pivotally mounted upon the said bar at the middle of its length and adapted to secure the inner end of the choke-strap.
The novel feature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the operative parts, whereby the strain upon the breeching is equalized for the purpose specifled.
In the'acoompanying drawings similar reference-numerals indicate like parts throughout.
Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective detail of my improvement, showing the relative arrangement of its operative parts and also showing the preferred manner of securing the adjacent ends of the choke and quarter straps thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of a harnessed draft-animal with my improvement in position thereon.
Referring now to Fig. 1, the pad 1 of any proper form or dimensions is preferably made of leather or other non-metallic flexible mateshown. At or near its center is fixed a pin or pivot 2, on which is pivotally mounted or fulcru med midway its ends a metallic lever 3, having a holding eye or slot 9 in the opposite ends thereof adapted to receive and secure proper snap-hooks 4: of common form, which are connected in any proper manner to the forward ends of the quarter-straps 5. on the pivot-pin 2 are loosely mounted the apertured free ends of the metallic straps or clevis 6, as shown, the forward looped end of which is adapted to loosely contain the ring 7, which in turn is loosely mounted in the adjacent rear end of the choke-strap 8 of well-understood form and function. The said lever 3and its above-described cooperative direction of the tension or strain upon the breeching 11, tends to equalize the strain upon the breeching caused either by the motion of the draft-animal in walking or by the weight of a load upon a downgrade. It is also obvious that my improvement greatly decreases, if not entirely obviates, the liability of the animal getting his rear foot over the said quarter-straps in kicking at flies, which was a well-known difficulty prior to my invention, and was without a successful remedy.
Obviously the material of which my invention is made is wholly immaterial so long as it has the requisite strength and lightness.
rial and is preferably circular in contour, as
My improvement thus constructed is simple, cheap, readily adj usted', has but small liability of getting out of repair, and by equalizing the strain contributes to the comfort of v thereof and adapted to secure the forward ends of the quarter-straps as shown; a metal strap or clevis pivotaily mounted on said 1ever and adapted for a holding engagement with the choke-strap, all substantially as de scribed.
Signed bym'e at Fort Wayne, Allen county, 20
