GEORGE BECK, OF ST. LOUIS', MISSOURI.
HARNESS ATTACHMENT.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,014, dated May 28, 1895.
Application filed March 29, 1895.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had `to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this speciiication, and to the letters'of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to that class of harness attach ments for which a patent was granted to me November 13, 1894, No.
' ing seats for the coils of the springs to hold -them securely thereto as shown in my former patent. These grooved pins project from hangers B C at the respective ends of the attachment as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the hangers B extending outside the end of the casing D and connected by a transverse bolt b by whichra loop is formed for attaching thereto a suitable leather strap to which the shaft-tug is buckled or otherwise secured.
The hangers C are connected to the opposite end of the casing by means of the transverse bolt c, which bolt extends through the sides of the casing and through ears d upon the under side of a cap-plate E and also through the hangers. This cap-plate E has projecting flanges e upon its four sides which flanges overlap the edges of the casing D and form a close and neat connection between the two.
The cap-plate E closes the opening at the end of the casing D and gives a neat appear- Serial No. 543,680. (No model.)
ance thereto, and as the casing is constructed of leather the cap-plate forms a means of strengthening the casing at its end while the ears d which project into the casing prevent the sides thereof from collapsing and holds them rigid. This cap-plate E upon its outer side has a central lugfto which is pivoted a c levis F having a slot g for convenience of attaching thereto the saddle of the harness. This clevis is pivotally connected to the lug of the cap-plate by means of a screw-bolt h which extends through holes in the sides of the clevis and through a hole in the lug, a screw nut engaging the screw threaded end of the bolt whereby said clevis may be removed when it is desired to attach the saddle thereto. The saddle is attached to the clevis by slipping the latter through the usual ring or loop at the upper part of the saddle of harness and afterward replacing the clevis by connecting it to the lug on the cap-plate, orfin case of a buckle being used on the harness, the clevis is slipped through the loop thereof and the tongue of the buckle extending through the slot g. The clevis being pivotally connected to the lug upon the cap-plate allows the attachment to swing back and forth to adapt itself to the motion of the horse.
The meeting edges of the casing D are secured by stitching orby suitable fastenings ias shown, and the casing being formed of leather instead of metal renders the attachment comparatively noiseless.
One or more springs may be used as found most desirable and any well known means may be Aemployed for pivotallyV and detachably connecting the clevis F to the lugf upon the cap-plate.
The employment of the cap-plate E with its ears d extending down into the casing D causes the weight or strain of the springs to be brought directly upon the ears and not upon the sides of the leather casing.
The attachment herein described takes the place of the tug-strap or bearer of the harness 9 ro tending transversely through the sides of the easingz the ears, and the hangers at the upper end of the springs, substantially as and for the purpose described. l
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence I5 of two witnesses.
' GEORGE BECK.
W'itnesses:
