SPECIFICATION forming part of vLetters Patent No. 290,530, dated December 18, 1383.

Be itknown that I, CHARLES YV. BURG- 'ronn a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Fetaluma, in the county ot Sonoma and State oi' California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Single Harness, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement in single harness comprises, togcther with other parts, as hereinafter set i'orth, a buckle that is adapted for use in connection With a single girth, and serving the double purpose of a girth-buckle to connect with the gig-saddle and a bottom buckle to connect the. girth with the straps which hold the shafts down, thereby dispensing with double girths and a multiplicity of buckles.
In the drawings which are hereunto annexed, and which form a part of this specification, Figure lis a perspective View, showing my improved buckle applied to the gig-saddle'and girth oi'a set oi' single harness. Fig. 2 is a face view of the buckle and its connections. Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing the end of the girth, the buckle, and the shaft-strap. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section th rough the buckle.
Similar letters of reference are used to indicate like parts throughout the several views. A represents an ordinary gig saddle, to which are attached the shaft-loopsB and girthstraps C. The girth D is provided at each end with a single buckle, E, (the constructionof which will be hereinafter more fully describeth) and also a slotted pad or flap, F, which extends beyond the end of the girth, and occupies a position between t-he under or inner side ofthe buckle and the animal s body, and thus prevents chaiing. The buckle connecting the girth with the other parts of the harness is made somewhat rectangular in plan, but with the upper portion or outer free end thereof curved upward, as shown in Fig. 4, in order that the said end may stand out somewhat from the animals side.
About midway of the length oi' the buckle I place a transverse bar, c, having a suitable roller, upon which the point of the tongue b rests, while the heel thereof is bent around the rear or hinge bar, h, in the usual manner. The sides c c are united at the top by the curved bar d, and thus a loop, e, is formed in advance of the buckle proper, and adapted to receive the shaft-straps. The buckle and the slotted pad F are thou secured to the girth in the usual manner, and the shaft-strap G is secured to the outer end oi' the buckle, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. This last-named strap is an ordinary strap of the proper length, having al buckle, j, upon one end; but the ily or loose end f of the strap is ina-de somewhat longer than usual, and While the main part of the strap is passed through the loop e the ily f is passed down upon the outside, and the two thicknesses are riveted together on either side of the top bar, d, b v means of rivets g g, and thus the said strap G is held in place and prevented from slipping.
vIn practice I first pass the shafts through the shaft-loops B, and then pass the girthstrap C from the inside through the slot t' in thepad F, and thence through the buckle, and
confine it by means of the tongue b. The shaftstrap G is then passed up and lapped around the shaft ou either side of the shaft-loop, as shown in Fig. 2, and brought down and passed through the buckle j, and thereby held in its proper position.
From the foregoing it Will be seen that I ain enabled to provide a means by which I dispense with the double girths in common use,
and yet provide for the holding down of the' vehicle-shafts and prevent their tilting upward beyond a certain regulated limit, as the same buckle which holds the gig-saddle and girth in place also serves as a hold-down buckle for the shaft-straps.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent, 1s-
In a single harness, the combination of the gig-saddle A, straps G C, girth D, shaft-straps G G, slotted pads F F, and the buckles E E, having a central cross-bar, a', provided with a roller, which forms a bearing for the tongue b, and a loop, e, for the reception of the shaftstraps, one of said buckles being placed at each end of the girth, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
