J. R. YOUNG.
TONGUE SUPPORT.
No. 878,525. Patented Mar. 18; 1888.
w v I I 286,228,
' tongue from off of the horse by means of suit- 'Nirnn STATES JOHN R. YOUNG, OF OSOEOLA, MISSOURI.
TONGUE-=SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,525, dated March 13, 1888.
Application tiledDecember 3, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. YOUNG, acitizen of the United States, residing at ,Osceola, in the county of St. Clair and State of'Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vagon and OarriageIongue Supporters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Ihis invention relates to improvements in vehicle-tongue supports; and it has for its ob ject to relieve the pressure or weight of the able adjusting devices.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings,to which ref erence is had and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, of the same.
Similar letters ofreferenceindicate like parts in both of the figures.
A indicates an axle, upon the upper surface of which an d near eachend are mortises a a, within which are fitted the lower or under surfaces of two hounds, B B. Two other mortises, bb, are made directly over a a in the under surfaces of a bolster, O, near each end, within which is fitted the bolster, the whole being secured together by means of nails or screws D. To the forward ends and between the hounds B B is pivotally secured, by means of a pin or bolt, (2, the rear end of a tongue, E, which articulates upon its fulcrum or'bolt d.
Secured to the under side of the tongue, and
Serial No. 256,875. (No model.)
in a line therewith, by means of a yoke or stirrup, H, having its ends screw-threaded and tapped, is a flat spring, F, and a movable curved block, G, the lower end of the yoke fitting in a groove, 9, in said block, and the upper ends of the yoke passing through perforations in a movable cross-bar, G. The rear end of the spring F has a hole therein, as also has one end of a connecting bar or reach, J, the end of which overlaps this end ofthe spring F, and they are connected together by means of a verticalpin, K,which passesthrough holes in the bolster and axle and through the holes in the spring and connecting bar, hereinbefore referred to. The forward end of the spring F has a slot, K, in it, through which a doubletreepin, Z, projects from the under side of the tongue, the pin serving as a guide for this end of the spring in its adjustment relatively with the tongue.
It will be seen by the construction of my devices that the tongue can be adjusted higher or lower to suit theexigencies or requirements of such adjustment, as occasion demands.
My device is simple in construction, easily adjusted, and cheap to manufacture.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the axle A and bolster O, of the bounds B B, tongue E, yoke-supporting crossbar G, yoke or stirrup H, curved block G, having the groove 9, slotted spring F, bolt d,'pin Z, connecting'bar J, and pin K, all constructed, arranged, and operated as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN It. YOUNG.
Vitnesses:
GEORGE A. NEAL, HENRY F. DELOZIER.
