To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LW'ILHELM SCHEERER, of Tuttlingen, lViirtemberg, Germany, have invented a new and useful Bottle-Closure, of

which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in bottle-closures.

The object of my invention is to produce a bottle -elosure which may be manipulated with one hand and which will seal the bottle in a perfect manner, my invention being especially applicable to bottles whose contents it is desired to maintain in a sterilized condition.

My invention consists in the features, details of construction, and combination of parts which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a 1011- gitudinal sectional view of a bottle provided with one form of device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a detail sectional view of that form of cap illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a similar view illustrating another form of cap and hood embodying my invention, and Fig. 5 a detail sectional view of the hood shown in Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawings, A is a bottle provided with an enlargement Ct, whereby a shoulder is formed on the neck of the bot- Figs. 1 and 3, or with two such recesses c c,

as shown in Fig. 4.

Thecap O 0 may bear against a cork E, which is inserted into the mouth of the bottle or into a tube B,which itself projects into the bottle'mouth. Around the cap and projecting below the lower edge of the same is placed an elastic hood or holding device which may be either cup-shaped, as shown at D in Figs. 1 and 2, or tubular, as shown at D in Figs. 4 and 5. In the former case the hood or holding device D is placed over the cap and projects some distance below the lower edge of the said cap, being provided at its lower edge with an enlargement or projection d, which is arranged to engage the under side of the bottle neck or shoulder and thus securely hold the cap 0 down upon the stopper or cork E, thereby retaining the same in place, while at the same time the air is excluded from the bottle.

By rolling up the lower projecting edge of the elastic hood or holding device until it reaches the peripheral recess 0 the said projecting edge will be retained in its rolled condition because of the enlargement d, whose elasticity will force the roll into the said recess. In this condition the cap, with the hood, may be raised from the bottle, thereby permitting the removal of the cork or stopper. To close the bottle, the cap is replaced and the projecting edge unrolled until the enlarged portion d comes below the shoulder a. By this construction, as will be fully understood, the elastic hood and cap may be manipulated by one hand in opening or closing the bottle, and the hood is held in its rolled position when the cap is removed from the bottle.

In the second form of construction the hood or holding device is not cup-shaped, but tubular, and insteadof passing over the upper end of the cap is provided with an enlargement at its upper edge, as shown at 01, Figs. 4 and 5, which upper enlargement enters the upper recess 0, Fig. 4, thus holding the hood to the cap 0.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a bottle closure, the combination, with a cap having a recessin its periphery, of an elastic hood connected to the cap and projecting below the same, said hood having an enlargement at its lower end arranged to engage the neck of the bottle and to hold the projecting portion of the hood in the recess in the cap when said portion is rolled up, substantially as set forth.
