SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,003, dated October 6, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DAVID G. BONNALLIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention is especially designed to be applied to brushes used for cleaning pavements and other like work, and it is the object of my invention to increase the life of the brush by providing means for quickly reversing the head in relation to the handle whenever the bristles become bent to one side.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the brush as in use. Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective view of the brush head and handle connection. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the members comprising the handle connection, showing them in the act of engagement; and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View thereof when engaged.

A is a brush-head, and B is the handle therefor. The connection between the handle and brush comprises the head member D and handle member E, preferably made of cast metal.

The member D is preferably formed as shown in the drawings, in which ct is a circular plate of a diameter corresponding to the width of the brush-head and provided with the flanges b, adapted to clamp over the edges of the head. This plate is also provided with apertures c, adapted to receive the securingscrews which fasten the plate to the head.

CZ is a socket Aformed at the center of a boss on the plate a, which socket tapers slightly from bottom to top and has an enlargement e at one side thereof, which, in connection with the bore of the socket at that point, oonstitutes an oblong opening at the upper end thereof. n

The member E consists of the socket f, adapted to receive the handle B, and the flaring head g at an angle to the socket f, being connected thereto by the curved bend h.

The head g is adapted to t the socket CZ and to turn freely therein, ybut is held in a fixed position by the set-screwF in the socket.

To engage the members D andE with each other, the socket end of the member E is slipped through the socket d, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the enlargement e allowing the bend h to pass. The memberD may then be secured to the head, the member E turned at right angles thereto, and the set-screw F tightened to hold it in this position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The handle B being engaged with the socket f, the brush may now be used until the bristles H become bent to one side. The set-screw F may then be loosened and the head reversed, as shown in Fig. l, when the brush may again be used until the bristles are turned the opposite way. Thus by frequently reversing the head the life of the brush may be greatly increased as well as keeping it constantly in better condition.

As shown in Fig. Llof the drawings, the enlargement e of the socket is arranged, in a plane at right angles to the plane in which the handle is normally arranged, so that-the head g will tit the socket closely and prevent all possibility of any rocking movement.

What I claim as may invention is l. In a reversible brush, the combination with the brush head and handle, of a connection between the two comprising the member E having the handle-socket f and Haring head g integral therewith united by a curved bend h, and the member D secured to the brush-head, provided with a tapering socket d adapted to receive the head g and having the socket-enlargement or entering-slot e, substantially as described.

2. In a reversible brush the combination with the brush head and handle, of a connection between the two comprising the member E having the handle-socket f and the flaring head gintegral therewith united bya curved bend h, and the member D consisting of the plate a. secured to the brush-head and having the downwardly-projecting side flanges b and the tapering socket d adapted to receive the head g and havingthe enlargement or entering-slot e and the set-screw F, suba stantially as described.
