IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSH-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of letters Patent No. 152,952, dated July 14, 1874; application led December 3, 1873.

To all fwhom it may concern Be it known that we,J011N L. MASON, of' New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex, and CHARLES L. W. BAKER, of the city and county of Camden, both in the State of' New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in BrushHolders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of' the nature thereof', sufficient to enable others skilled in the art 'to which our invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the device embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of' Fig. 1.

This invention consists in the construction of a holder intermediate of the handle andthe back of the brush, whereby the brush may be made to assume various angles, as will be found necessary for purposes of brushing or cleansing' the under side of' places difficult or inconvenient of access, such as the hulls of ships, bows, and sterns thereof', Ste., without Vnecessarily or directly passing to such places.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a brush, and B a plate or forked piece, which is to be secured to the back of the brush in any well-known manner. The piece B is connected to a block, C, so as to project laterally therefrom, and this block is jointed transversely to a block, D, by means of a bolt, E, which passes through the two blocks, and is provided with a thumb-nut, F, for tightening the two blocks. The contiguous faces or inner end of' the blocks are serrated so that the serra-tions or teeth a will interlock, and thus firmly connect the blocks. G represents a socket for the handle H. The block D is jointed longitudinally to the socket G, and a bolt, J, passes through the connected ends of the block and socket, and constitutes the axis of the two parts. A thumb-nut, K, is applied to the bolt for securely holding the said block D and socket G. The contiguous faces or side portions of the block and socket are serrated, and the serrations or teeth b interlock for firmly connecting the two relative parts.

It will be seen that by this construction, in using the brush the bristles thereof may be faced upward, and a person 011 the deck of a vessel may scrub or cleanse the sides and hull thereof', and from the same position reach the bow and stern, it being only necessary to iinpart the proper angle to the transverse and horizontal joints of the blocks and socket to give the required set to the handle. rIhe brush can also be used overhead, with the bristles pointing downward or upward, and for cleansing ot masts the device may be readily employed by having the bristles face the operator, and he is enabled to get around the work 7 in various ways, the variety bein g accomplished by, or due to, the actions ofthe two distinct and different joints interposed between the brush and the handle thereof'.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The socket G, constructed with the serrations b, and the block D, constructed with the serrations a b, in combination with the block C, constructed with the serrations a, the whole arranged and operating as herein set forth.
