UNITED STATES PATENT GFEICE..
JOHN S. WHITE, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
BRUSH.
sPEcIFIcATIoN vforming part of Letters Patent No. 282,137, dated July e1, 188e.
Application led March 5, 1883. (No model.)
`V .T all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN STAPLES WHITE,`
I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a side view, Fig. 2 a vertical and longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section, of a brush provided with my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. This brush, which is intended for use in washing windows or removing dust from walls, 8m.,
is, as represented, ellipsoidal, .though it may be ovoidal or spherical, or substantially so, `in form. It consists of two concavo-convex blocks, A A, having `bristles B drawn into them by wires, and projecting from their outer or convex surfaces, such two blocks being arranged in manner as shown, and connected by two metallic thimbles, C C', adapted to them, respectively, and joined by a screw, D, going 2 5 through the head of one thimble .and screwed into that of the other, as represented. Each `of these thimbles may be screw-threaded in its 4interior space or bore, inorder for it to screw upon a handle or pole at one end thereof'.
Instead of having two thimbles, one may be used to extend into both blocks, and `serve to connect or aid in connecting them together; or other proper means of connecting the blocks may be employed.
By having each block recessed or concave,
\ as well as convex, as shown, the confining wires of the bristles of one do not interfere with those of the other, to prevent the fiat sur- -face of one block coming into close contact 4o with that of the other. i
In order to prevent one block from turning out of place on the other, I provide them with one or more dowels,c, inserted in them; or
one block may have one or more tenons to extend from it into the other.`
With a brush consisting of two separate `brushes semi-spherical or ellipsoidal inform and arranged and fastened together substantially as described, there is little, if any, danger while using it of breaking a window or injuring a surface against which it may be moved. It is lespecially useful as a railwaycar-windowfcleaner. I makeno claimto abrush composed of two semicircular blocks connected together and havingbristles projecting from their peripheries, all being as shown in the United States Patent No. 55,815. Nor do I claim a slatecleaner and pencil-holder composed of abottle and its stopper and sponges `encompassing 6o them, as shown in theUnited States Patent No. 221 ,883. In my brush each of the blocks is not only convex laterally, but longitudinally, so as when supplied with bristles and placed and secured together 'a brush spherical, ovoidal, or ellipsoidal in form, or essentially so, is produced, which differs materially from any brush or device sho Wn in either of said patents.
I claimy l. A brush composed of two separate semi- 7o spherical or semi-ellipsoidal brushes arranged and provided with one or more connectingthimbles, anda screw, adapted to them as represented, for connecting them together, all being substantially as described. t
2. A brush composed of two separate semispherical or semi oval or ellipsoidal brushes, arrangedand doweled or tenoned and conneoted together substantially as set forth.
