UNITED STATES Patented May 17, 1904.
JAMES H. WILSON, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 760,047, dated May 17, 1904.
Application filec". June 15, 1903. Serial No. 161,433. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES H. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tooth-Brushes,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises a handle, straight or approximately straight throughout the greater portion of its length, but bent or curved near one end for attachment to the brush-supporting or bristle-supporting surface of a cross-head or brush-head arranged at about right angles to the axial plane of said handle and extending on opposite sides thereof.
The principal object of this construction is to enable the brush-surfaces of the head to opcrate on the corresponding vertical surfaces of the teeth of the upper and lower jaws simultaneously and to enable the brush to be brought in contact with and thoroughly clean the rear surfaces of the rearmost teeth more quickly and with less discomfort. The brushsurface of the cross-head may also be applied to the outer and inner surfaces of all the teeth.
I have also shown how a brush of the common form may be, if desired, made on the opposite end of the handle.
This invention consists in the devices and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a plan of atooth-brush embodying my im provement and provided also with a brush of the usual form; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a plan of the same inverted; Fig. 4, an end elevation of the same.
The handle A is of any usual or suitable material, as ivory, bone, or wood, and may be of usual shape except as hereinafter stated and is represented as substantially straight throughout the greater portion of its length, but bent or curved at a to meet that surface of the cross-head or brush B from which the bristles 5 project, said surface being nearly parallel with the main part of the handle. The brush B is arranged with its greatest length at right angles to the plane in which the axis of the handle lies and might be regarded as two brushes 6 6, arranged on opposite sides of the handle and having a common stock or back, each brush-surface having a suflicient length to cover vertically a row of teeth.
In cleaning the outer surfaces of the molars or double teeth the curved or bent part a of the handle is between the upper and lower jaws, and the part of the handle adjacent to said part a is just inside the teeth, and in cleaning the inner surfaces of said molars the main part of the handle is between said teeth and the cheek, and the curved part a lies between the upper and lower jaws.
On a suitable surface of the end portions of the handle farthest from the brush B may be supported another brush Got any usual suitable material and of the usual form.
I claim as my invention 1. A tooth-brush comprising a brush-head and a handle, curved or bent near one end to meet the brush-supporting surface of said head and secured at said end to said surface.
2. A tooth-brush comprising a brush-head including a back having a face, provided with a brush device, and a handle curved or bent near one end to meet said brush-provided face and secured to said face at an angle therewith.
3. A tooth-brush comprising a suitablehandle, curved or bent near one end thereof, and a brush-head attached to said bent end transversely thereof and atan angle therewith and provided on its attached face with brush devices arranged on opposite sides of said handle.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. WILSON.
