Description
J. E. HAMILTON.
TOOTH BRUSH.
APPLICATION FILED IuLY 23, I9I3.
1,179,426. Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN E. HAMILTON, OF SMITHTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
Application filed July 23, 1913.
T o all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN E. HAMILTON, citizen of the United States, residing at Smithton, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Tooth-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n tooth brushes and more particularly to the bristles thereof.
Thel primary object of the invention contemplates the provision of specially shaped bristles adapted to be arranged or embedded within the head of the brush handle in such a novel and peculiar manner as to render the action thereof upon the gums and teeth of a person less painful than the bristles now employed. e
A further object of the invention contemplates the provision of a plurality of curved end bristles arranged inV series disposed to extend longitudinally of the brush head and transversely thereof, one bristle of each series alternating with the bristles of the adjacent series thereby increasing the cleaning properties of the tooth brush.
The invention still further resides 1n the provision of bristles of the ordinary type having the curved end bristles disposed to` surround or inclose the same thereby deriving the advantages and benefits produced by both forms of bristles.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their-preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following speciication and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and forma part of this a'pplication. u
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views` and in which Y Figure 1 is a front elevation of atooth brush constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the arrangement of the curved bristles when employed in connection with the straight bristles now commonly used; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view illustrating the manner in which the bristles are embedded within the head of the brush.
Referring now to the drawings wherein Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1.8, 1916.
Serial No. 780,782,
thereof to facilitate the suspension of the brush when not in use. A head 3 is formed integrally with the handle 1 at the opposite end thereof from that of the opening 2, the head having specially formed bristles embedded therein as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The bristles, designatedby the numeral 4 are arranged in series, one series extending longitudinally of the brush head 3 and another series extending transversely of the said head, the bristles 4 of the one set being disposed transversely of the bristles 5 of the said other set thereby increasing the cleaning properties of the brush when in practical use.
Upon reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that each bristle is formed from a single hair or other material bent as illustrated after the fashion of an inverted U with the free ends embedded in the Ahead of the brush, the curved or connecting portion of each bristle forming the engaging surface of the bristle during the use or application of the invention. The said curved portion of the bristles renders the scratching and injury to the gums less painful without decreasing the cleaning propertiesy of the brush.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the curved or double bristles surrounding a plurality of single stem bristles 6, the former acting as a guard or protection against the injury to the gums ,that would otherwise occur were the said curved bristles not provided. The curved bristles in this instance are also disposed alternately, that is one bristle extending transversely of the brush head and the next or adjacent bristle extending longitudinally thereof.
It will be seen from the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my'invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is T l. A tooth brush including a head portion, bristles having their ends embedded within the said head, the said bristles being bent intermediatetheir .ends to form curved engaging surfaces, the said bristles being arranged in series, certain of which extend transversely of the brush head and the others of which extend longitudinally thereof.
2. A tooth brush including a head p0rtion, bristles secured to the said head portion, the said bristles being bent intermediate their ends, the ends of each bristle being vembedded within the said head, the saidy bristles being, arranged in series upon the said head, certain of which extend transversely thereof, the others of which extend longitudinally thereof, thereby alternating the position of the`bristles throughout the entire cleaning surface of the brush. In testimony whereof I afiix my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
