Be it known that I, GUSTAVE STRASSBURGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, more particularly the class known as tooth-brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brushes and more particularly to such brushes as are used incleansing the teeth, and consists in so arranging the bristles that some or all may stand in a graduated relation.

The object of my invention is to provide a tooth brush wherein the bristles are so arranged as to reduce the harshness or stiffness 'of the bristles and thereby minimize the wear on the enamel, and at the same time increase the cfiiciency of the brush.

There are two longitudinally graduated rows or bristles one on either side of the brush, graduating'in opposite directions in their relations to each other from a point near one end of the brush and at a miximum height, to a point near the other end and of a minimum height.

- In use the brush is rotated in the mouth giving the bristles an up and down motion in their relation to the teeth and some of the bristles by reason of the graduation of the outside rows engage the spaces between the teeth while other bristles rub cndwise on the enamel serving to more efficiently cleanse the teeth.

13 y reason of the construction described the pressure upon the enamel by the bristles contacting therewith, is minimized through the ability of the longer bristles to freely enter between the teeth without additional pressure on the other bristles, necessary to so contact same'as to secure that relative difference in length necessary to permit simultaneously, action 'upon surfaces of different planes.

As before stated there is in the cohstruction of this brush in addition to the bristles which are graduated transversely outsiderows which are likewise graduated longitudinally with relation to succeeding bristles to accommodate the brush to the diversity of the formation of the incisors and cuspids and the varying depth of the openings presented between these different forms of teeth. The central rows of bristles being to the outside row in substantially the same relation as the front enamel to'the depth of the space between the teeth. r

Referring to the accompanying sheet ofdrawings which forms a part of this specification; Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tooth brush constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the tooth brush, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the tooth brush showing the opposite side of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

-In the embodiment of my invention I provide a tooth brush having the usual handle a, to which is secured the substantially parallel bristles b, in the usual manner and arranged in rows.

Referring to the drawing c represents the rowof bristles on one side of the brush graduating in height from the highest point e near the front end of the brush to the lowest point f near theother or handle end as shown in Fig. 1.

It will be understood that I do not wish to confine vmyself to this particular form of construction but several or all of the rows or bristles maybe graduated in the same or opposite directions.

Having thus described my invention what ,I claim is 1. A tooth brush having the height of its bristles graduated, in the outside row of one side of the brush, from a point near the front end of the brush with a maximum height, to a. point near the other end of the brushwith a minimum height, and a similar row of bristles on the other side of the brush but graduating in the opposite directions from those of the first row whereby'parallel longitudinal rows of bristles will simultaneously contact with'the enamel of, and enter the spaces between the teeth.
