IINITED STA'IlES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL WHOOLERY, OF BROWNFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
GUN-CLEANER.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, SAMUEL VVHooLnRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownfield, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gun-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gun cleaners and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device which may be conveniently carried in the pocket or any other small space and to which an operating cord or rod may be conveniently connected.
A further object of the invention is a provision of a device of this character embodying separable parts, between which a cleaning rag and bristle brush or a lead scraper may be readily attached.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the rod connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a cord connected to one end of the cleaner. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a cord connecting the attachment mounted in the opposite end. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing a brass wire washer secured between the members. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the washers. Fig. 7 is an elevation of a long screw adapted to be used where the cleaning rod is provided with a threaded socket. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of an eye bolt used to connect the cord to the device.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing, 1 and 2 represent separate members of the device, both of which are shaped substantially like the frustum of a cone, the member 2 having a centrally threaded passage 3 for the reception of a centrally positioned projecting screw 4: which is carried by the member 1. The member 1 is provided at its small end with a threaded socket 5 for the reception of a retaining rod 6, for the long screw 8 or for the eye bolt 9 while the member 2 is provided with a transverse Specification of Letters Patent.

passage 10 of somewhat larger diameter than the threaded channel 3 so as to permit the passage of a cord or wire on opposite sides of the screw 4 when the members are connected together. By unscrewing the members, a cloth may be placed in between the parts and clamped therein or a washer 10 of wire fabric may be secured between the members for losening caked powder or for removing lead from the gun.
It will be noticed that with this invention, a cleaning rod may be used with the cleaning head or a cord may be attached to either end for drawing the head through the gun. In practice, the outfit would contain all of these parts so that the user of the gun might have a rod at home and carry the head and a string with him in the field so that the gun could be occasionally cleaned, if found to be necessary without going to the inconvenience of carrying a rod.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of separate conical members, a screwthreaded connection between the two adapted to clamp a cleaning element between the members, one of said members having a threaded socket to receive an operating device, the other of said members having a transverse aperture to receive an operating device.
2. In a gun cleaner, a pair of conical members, one of said members having a centrally threaded channel, a longitudinally projecting screw on the opposite member adapted to thread into said channel, a cleaning element clamped between said members, one of said members having a transverse aperture extending across the threaded channel and having a diameter larger than the screw so as to receive an operating device between the walls of the aperture and screw, the other of said members having a threaded socket to receive an operating device.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL VHOOLERY. Witnesses:
W. W. SEATON, J. S. ALTON.
