ATTORNEY f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS GROUNDMAN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
PEN.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,407, dated May 19, 1896.
Application filed November 21, 1895 Serial No. 569 ,613. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS GROUNDMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New. York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Pens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates towriting-pens, and the object thereof is to provide a pen which is so constructed that when the point has been worn out or become corroded, so that it cannot be used, it may be broken away and a new point provided; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the pen constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompan ying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a back plan View of my improved pen, and Fig. 2 a side View thereof.
In the-practice of my invention I provide a pen A, which is substantially of the usual form and preferably composed of spring-steel or other suitable material.
The pen A is provided with the usual point a, formed by cutting away the corners at one end, as shown at a, and said pen is split or divided from the point a to an oblong slot a near the opposite end, and formed therein in line with the inclined sides a are inclined slots B, by means of which a second point 6 is formed, and between the inclined slots B and the oblong slot o are other inclined slots D, by means of which a third point dis formed.
My invention is not limited to the number of the slots 13 and D or to the number of points Z) and d formed thereby, and the operation will be apparent from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that the diverging ends of the slots B and D project very nearly to the sides of the pen, and that said slots converge until they meet to form the points I) and cl, and whenever the point a is so worn or corroded as to be no longer of service the sides by which said point is formed are broken away and the point I) may then be used, and when the point I) is worn or corroded and useless the sides by which it is formedmay be broken away and the point d presented for use. It will thus be found that I provide a plurality of pens in one, and. I thus accomplish a great saving in material and in the cost of manufacture, and. I also provide a pen which is very convenient, and which obviates the frequent necessity of changing pens when articles of this class as now constructed are employed.
My invention is not limited to the exact form and. construction of the pen as herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- A pen of the usual form and provided with the usual point, and with a plurality of inclined slots at each side thereof, which converge to form additional points, which diverge to near the sides of the pen, the first and second points and so on being adapted to be broken away, a central slit extending from each of the points to a slot above the upper point, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of November, 1895.
AUGUSTUS GROUNDMAN.
