FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,586, dated January-7, 1896.
Application led December 8, 1894. Renewed December 2, 1895. Serial No. 570,863. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:V
Be it known that I, HARLEY C. ROGERS, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in folding cots.
In the drawings which accompany an d form a part of this specification, and in which similar numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, Figure l shows a perspective view of my improved cot in open position, a portion of the-wire fabric being omitted. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of one corner of the cot, showing the connections between the leg and side rail. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the parts shown in open position. Fig. 4 shows the leg in folded position.
The frame of the cot consists of the side rails 2 2 and cross-bars 3 3, between which is stretched the fabric 4. At either corner of the frame is provided a leg 5, the legs being arranged in pairs and connected by bars, as 6 7, constituting, with their intermediate spindles, head and foot boards. In open or extended position the end of the side rail 2 abuts against the post and is connected to the post by a hanger 8 pivoted to the side rail adjacent to its end at 9 and pivoted to the post above the point where it engages the side rail at 10, the pivot 10 engaging the hanger 8 in a slot 11, permitting a slight sliding movement on the pivot. A link 12 is pivoted to the side low the end of the side rail. The end of the hanger 8 is extended, as shown at 8a, beyond the pivot 9, which extended end is adapted to engage and lock into the notch 12uin the side of the link or brace 12. The leg and. side rail are located in the same plane, and the leg 5 folds onto the under side of the side rail, as shown in Fig. 4, and the hanger 8 andlink 12 are preferably provided on the inner side of the side rail and leg, although they will work equally as well on the outer side.
To open the cot, the leg 5 is turned from the position shown in Fig. 4 to a position at right angles with the side rail, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. When the parts come to this position, the hanger 8 will occupy the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and the rail the dotted lines in the same figure. By forcing down on the frame the parts are moved into the position shown in full lines, the projecting end 8f of the hanger 8 entering the notch 12a in the link 12, thus locking the post firmly on the end of the side rail. This movement is permitted by the slot 11 in the end of the hanger 8.
To fold the cot, the frame is held up, when, by a slight blow on top of the post, or head or foot taken as a whole, the projecting end 8a of the hanger is disengaged from the link, the parts going through the reverse of the movement before described, thereby unlocking the parts and permitting the leg to be folded.
W'hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a folding cot, with the side-rail and leg, of the hanger pivoted to the post and laterally movable on the pivot at one end and pivoted to the side-rail at the other end, the end being projected beyond the latter pivot, and a link or brace pivoted at one end to the post below the line of the siderail, and to the side-rail at a point more removed from the end than that of the pivot of the hanger, and provided with a notch in which the end of the hanger is adapted to engage, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the side-rail and post of a folding cot, of the extended hanger 8 pivoted to the side-rail and to the post, and the notched link or brace 12 also pivoted to the side-rail and post, and with which the being arranged to ntelock, substantially as hanger engages, substantially as set forth. set forth.
3. The combination in a folding Cot, of a In Witness whereof I have aflxed my signapost or leg and side-rail, of a hanger or link ture in presence of two Witnesses. 5 pvoted to the post above the line of the sde- HARLEY C. ROGERS.
rail, and to the end of the side-rail, and a link Witnesses: or brace pvoted to the side-rail and. to the VM. P. GRIFFITH,
post below the side-rail, the hanger and brace F. L. ROTH.
