Description

NrrED STATES JAMES C. ARMS, OF NOETHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT yIN PAPER SHIRT-Bosowls.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,@112, dated February 27, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. C. ARMS, of Northampton, in the county of Hampshire and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Bosoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciiication, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use the invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the body of a paper bosom or shirt-front constructed in the usual manner.
B represents a central vertical plait, which I form by folding the body A as shown in cross-section in Fig. 3. The edges of this plait are fastened down by stitching it, as represented in Fig. 2, or it may be secured by means of any lsuitable cement, in which case the plait will be embossed to represent stitchin g.
C represents a piece of cloth secured to the top ot' the bosom at the center of the front and projecting above the bosom, as shown, where it is provided with a button-hole for attaching the bosom to the shirt-band at front.
D represents the band of the bosom, which consists of the points of the bosom itself, eX- tended at its upper corners far enough to reach around the neck and meet behind, each of these points or straps D being provided with a button-hole, a, as shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. l the band D is represented as being made ot' a separate piece or strip of paper and attached in such a manner as to be inclined forward, so that wh en applied to and bent around the neck it will stand vertically, or nearly so.
It will be understood that either of these forms ot' band may be used as may be found most convenient in the manufacture, and that they will be made ot' various sizes and numbered, the same as collars are non7 made.
By these means I am enabled to produce a bosom which can be applied at once withoutthe use ot' eyelets, strings, cords, hooks, buttons, or other fastenings of any kind attached to the bosom itself, thereby forming a very neat and cheap article, which, when used, can be thrown away without the loss ot' anything else than the paper itseli'.
Having thus fully described my invention, l
what I claim is- A paper bosom having a central plait formed by folding the paper as shown and described, with or without the points D, of suf'cient length to reach around the neck, and provided with the button-holes a, the whole constituting a new article ot' manufacture.
JAMES C. ARMS.
