Beit known that I, WALTER S. DAVIS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Grosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blotters, as set forth in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view showing one of my blotters and its application to a ruled page or sheet. Fig. 2, represents a blotter having pockets or recesses at its ends to receive slidable pieces which form extensions of the blotter. My invention'relates to blotters especially designed to facilitate the posting of accounts in ledgers, and to prevent the entering of items on the wrong side of the ledger account, and my invention consists broadly in providing the blotter with a lateral extension adapted to cover a portion of the column of the ledger at one side to serve as a warning and to prevent the book-keeper or accountant from entering items in the wrong column.

My invention also consists in providing the blotter with a holder or pad in which su pple mental pieces or tabs are mounted and adapted to be drawn outwardly to form extensions at right angles to said holder or pad whereby said extensions or tabs will extend over a portion ot' one of the columns in the ledger when the entries are being made in the other column whereby entries in the wrong column is prevented.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same I will now describe its construction and indicate the manner in which the same is carried out.

In carrying out my invention I provide with a blotter, a portion or tab o. which is designed to form a right angled extension at one side of the body of the blotter or pad,said extension or tab having upon one side the Word Crediting and upon the other side Debiting and such other subject matter as may be desired. The extension or tab amay be integral with the blotting sheet or pad as in Fig. l, or may be secured as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

In Fig. 2 I illustrate a blotting pad, where one or more sheets c of Celluloid or other ma` terial are secured to the blotting sheets in such a manner as to leave pockets b near the ends of the sheets or pad, and within said pockets the supplemental pieces or tabs a are located and adapted to slide in and out when desired to form right angled extensions either at the credit or debit end of the 'blotter. In using a blotter of this kind the tabs or pieces a should be constructed so that they cannot be entirely detached from the pad or holder, and this may be done by any suitable means, as by making the tabs T-shaped with their head portions inserted in the portions and adapted to contact with stops formed by the walls of the opening through which the tabs are drawn out, or by rivets or other suitable means.

In Fig 3 the end of the blotting sheet is passed into a pocket d formed in the side edge of a holder or pad and maybe permanent therewith or removable therefrom as desired.

In using my blotter and posting the accounts on the credit side, the blotteris laid upon the page with the tab extended and the side having the Word Crediting on it uppermost and covering a portion of the debit column to prevent the entry of items in said column. In posting items in the debit column the blotter is reversed, or the tab at the debit side pushed back into its pocket, and the tab at the credit side pulled out or cxtended so that it lies at the right hand side of the page and partially covers the credit column to prevent entries on that side of the ledger page; the pad being also used for the ordinary purpose of a blotter on the page.

In using the holder or pad of Fig.3 withits pocket as shown and described,I am enabled to utilize the customary blotting sheets and at the .same time cause the extended portion of the pad or holder to serve as a tab for the purposes before explained.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
