Description

J.W. 0. GILMAN.
Copy-Book.
No. 222,350. Patented Dec. 9, 1879.
INVENTDR'Q 'LPUERS. PKOTO-LITHOGRAPHEIL WASHINGTON. D. O.
UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN W. O. GILMAN, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COPY-BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 222,350, dated December 9, 1879; application filed July 12, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN W. 0. GIL- MAN, of Maiden, in the "county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Writing and Drawing Books, 850., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a writing, drawing, or other exercise book, which is provided with one or more removable leaves orpages having one or more tongues adapted to be inserted between and held by the portion of the leaves through which the binding-thread is passed and by the said thread.
It further relates to the means for securing said leaf or page to the book. I It is desirable, for obvious reasons, that scholars should practice their writing, drawlng, or other exercises before transcribing them upon the pages of the exercise-book, and
it has become the customof dealers in school-' books to furnish what is known as practice fuse. The books having pages for practice bound in are too expensive for common use.
Reference -is made to the accompanying drawings in explaining the nature of my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective of an open duplex writing-book with the practice-page a in position, the said page being fastened to the book by the tongues or projections a, which are inserted between the leaves a a as shown, and are held by them and the binding-thread c Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate the practice-page prepared for attachment to the writin g-book by having the tongues or extensions a formedon the margin thereof in such manner as not to contact with the binding-thread when inserted into the book. Fig. 4. is a perspective illustrating a method of looking a practice-sheet to the book .by means of the extensions (1. upon the tongue.
These extensions a must project sufficiently beyond the binding-thread a. so that the thread is embraced by the recesses a so arranged upon the inner edge of the prac- I Lice-page as to permit the recesses B to come in line with that portion of the binding-thread a which passes through the leaves to the back A of the book.
It will thus be seen that my invention consists in a bound writing, drawing, or other exercise book provided with one or more detachable pages, which are secured therein in the manner indicated, and in a sheet, leaf, or page of practice-paper provided with one or'more tongues or extensions, which are adapted to be inserted between and held by the portion of the bound leaves of the book through which the binding-thread is passed and by the said thread.
The advantages of the invention consist in .the facilitywith which the practice sheet, leaf,
or page can be attached to the writing or other book; in the firmness with which it is held; in the ease with which it can, be removed, and in the economy and simplicityofthe construction.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim and desire to secure by LettersIfat-f ent of the United States- 1 1. A writing, drawing, or other. exercise book provided with one or more detachable.
leaves of practicepaper having the tongues a and recesses 13, and which are fastened in said book by said tongues or projections on said leaves inserted between and held by the portion of the bound leaves of the book through which the binding-thread passes and by said thread, all substantially as described.
2. A practice leaf, sheet, or page adapted to be fastened to a bound writing, drawing, or other exercise book provided with one or more tongues or extensions, a, for insertion between the boundportions of the leaves of the book, i
and with the'recess or recesses B between the tongues, substantially as and for the purposes described.
JONA. W. G. GILMAN.
In presence of- F. F. RAYMOND, 2d, A. J. OETTINGER.
