B.'PIGK-ERING.
POSTAL STAMP HOLDER.
No. 480,509. Patented Aug. 9, 189 2.
awe/rm UNITED STATES A PATENT OFFICE.
BARTON PIOKERING, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
POSTAL-STAM P HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,509, dated August 9, 1892. Application filed January 30, 1890. Serial No. 338,622. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTON PICKERING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Postal-Stamp Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 1
My invention relates to improvements in postal-stamp holders, the features of which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The object of my invention is the use of a spring-carrier attached to the closing-plate of a case and holding postal stamps thereon in the case, so that as said carrier is partially withdrawn the stamps are held against the inner surface of the top of said case in convenient position to be taken out for use on mailable matter.
I accomplish the object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of the case with the carrier partially withdrawn. Fig. 2 is a top View of the carrier. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the holder on line m, Fig. 1, the parallel lines showing the position of the stamps. Fig. 4 is a varied form of carrier.
The several views are enlarged to about twice the proper size.
Like letters and numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.
A is a metallic case open at the end, and B is the closing-plate, which fully covers the opening in said case.
0 is a supporting-frame made of springwire. At its center is a vertical bend 4. Thence the wire extends parallel to bends 3 3, thence back in parallel lines to bends 2 2, which are in a vertical plane, thence to the bends 1 1, and these ends are soldered to the closing-plate, the same being held at a right angle to the general contour of said wire frame.
B is a slightly-varied form of supportingframe, and in its general features quite like the former. The sides are identical, and instead of the semicircular bends 3 3 there are the two bends 5 5 at a rightangle to the sides, forming a straight connection from side to side, and onto which is soldered the plate 4.. This plate is bent at its back end and this part again at the top, forming a double angle, which embraces the end of the stamps as they are placed into the carrier. The parallel lines 7 represent the holder as filled with stamps. (See Fig. The front end of the carrierframe is bent down and the resiliency of the wire presses the ends of the stamps against the inner end of the inclosing case, and while there are stamps in the carrier they are thus held. In the form of carrier B the stamps are held on the central portions of the wire and the inner ends bear against the vertical bend 4. In use the stamps are bunched, put into the carrier, and inserted in the case, and to remove a stamp draw the carrier partially out of the case and draw out the stamp.
The essential features of my invention are the side spring portion of the wire and the supporting-frame attached to said sides, and the latter part may have a variety of forms.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A postage-stamp holder comprising the open-ended case A, the closing-plate B, the supporting Wire frame 0, having a vertical bend at its center, bent to form parallel bends 3 3, thence back in parallel lines to vertical bends 2 2, thence to bends l 1, and joined to said closing-plate, substantially as shown and described.
2. A postage-stamp holder comprising the open-ended case A and the spring-carrier B, provided with plate 4, on which the stamps are held, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Iafiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
BARTON PIOKERING.
