lUNllTE STATES SIGISMUND STRAUSS,
PATENT @rricn.
OF NEN YORK N. Y.
CIGAR-'iVlOISTENER AND PRICE AND BRAND TICKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,512, dated April 1, 1902.
Application filed April 19. 1901.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIGISMUND STRAUSS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved CigarMoistener and Price and Brand Ticket, of which the following is-a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a moistener adapted for attachment to a cigarbox and which When in position on a box will be held overthe cigars in said box, yet out of contact with the cigars.
A further purpose ofthe in vention is to provide a clamp-support for the moistener upon which the moistener is pivoted, enabling a person desiring free access to all parts of a box of cigars over which the moistcner is held to quickly and conveniently move the moistener out of the way and restore it to its nor mal position.
Another purpose of the invention is to so construct the moistener that its upper face may be utilized as a label or ticket indicating the name, character, and price of the cigars in the box to which the device is applied.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafterfully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective View of a box of cigars and a perspective View of the device applied to the said box, the moistener being in position over the cigars and a part of the moistener being broken away; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device, illustrating a slight difference in its construction and illustrating the moistener as raised from over the cigars in the box to which the moistener is applied.
A represents a cigar-box of the usual type, and B the cigars in said box.
The moistener O is shown as of circular shape in the drawings but it may be given any desired shape-as, for example, it may be made of lozenge shape, or it may be rectangular or polygonal. The moistener 0 con- Serial No. 56,581. (No model.)
sists of a top plate 10. Upon this plate the name of the cigar contained in the box may be produced. The character of the cigar may likewise be indicated on the said plate, together with its price. The said. moist-ener further consists of a body-section 11, which is attached to the marginal portion of the plate 10, the said bodyportion being of reticulatedv or perforated material, having an upwardly-extending marginal flange 12, likewise reticulated or perforated, which is secured in any suitable orapproved mannerto the upper plate 10. 1
In the space between the upper plate 10 of the moistener and the reticulated bottom or body portion thereof an absorbent material 13 is located, such as felt, and this absorbent material may occupy a portion of or the entire space mentioned. Then the moistener is in use, the absorbent material 13 is saturated with as much water as it will hold without dripping.
-In connection with the moistener C a clampholder D is employed. This clamp-holder is made of a spring-wire of a suitable gage, the wire being bent upon itself to form an outer downwardly-extending yoke or U-shaped member 14 and inner twin legs 15, located opposite the side members of the yoke member 14, and the said legs likewise extend in a downward direction, together with a horizontal yoke 15 which is a continuation of the upper portion of the inner strands or members of the said legs 15. In Fig. 1 arms 16, consisting of pieces of wire of suitable length, are pivotally connected with the outer or bow section 14 of the holder, the outer ends of said arms 16 being shown as provided with eyes 17, which have sliding and pivotal engagement witl'i the side members of the outer yoke 14 of the holder, and the inner or free ends of these arms 16 are passed into the moistener C through convenient apertures or openings in the flange of its bottomportion, as is shown in both of the figures.
In Fig. 2 I have illustrated a slight deviation in the construction of the holder, which deviation consists in dispensing with the eyes 17 and connecting the arms 16 by a cross-bar 18, which cross-bar is made to enter the space between the yoke 14 and the opposing mem bers of the legs 15.
In operation the clamp-support D is attached to the body of the cigar-box by causing the yoke member 14 to pass along the outer face of the box and the legs 15 to be located at the inner face of the box, whereupon the horizontal yoke 15 is located within the box at a slight distance above the contents of said box, and when the moistener O is carried down to the horizontal position (shown in Fig. 1) the arms 16, directly supporting the said moistener, rest upon the inner yoke 15", as is also shown in Fig. 1. The moistener will now be held over the cigars in the box, yet out of contact therewith, and upon the upper plain face of the moistener the name, character, and price of the cigar may be plainly read by the prospective purchaser.
Should the moistener be in the way when a cigar is to be removed from the box, said moistener may be carried out from the box and made to incline outwardly from the section of the box to which the clamp-supportis secured, as shown in Fig. 2, and when the moistener is in this position the entire contents of the box are accessible. The selection havingbeen made, the moistener may be dropped down to its normal position.
It will be observed that the moisten er serves a dual purpose-namely, it keeps the cigars in a proper condition for use and also serves as a label for the contents of the box.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a cigar-moistener, of a clamp-support adapted for attachment to a cigar-box and support the moistener in the box, the clamp-support consisting of opposing clamping members adapted for engagement with opposite faces of a member of a box, a horizontal yoke located at the upper portion of one of the members of the clamp and adapted to extend Within the box to which the clamp-support is applied, and arms arranged for engagement with the moistener,
which arms are pivotally connected with the clamping-support and in their normal position are adapted to rest upon the said yoke, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a cigar-moistener having a plain u pper section and a reticulated or perforated lower section connected with said upper section and an absorbent material between the two sections, of aclamp-support comprising an outer yoke, inner fingers parallel with theside portions of the outer yoke, the outer yoke and fingers having a downward direction, an inwardly-projecting horizontal yoke extending from the upper portions of the fingers, and arms pivot-ally attached to the upper portion of the clamp-support, which arms enter the moistener through apertures in its edge, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a cigar-moistener, a moistener proper, a clamp adapted to be secured to a cigar-box and provided with an inwardly-projecting horizontal member, and arms pivotally connected with the clamp and to the free ends of which the moistener is secured, said arms in their normal position being adapted to rest on the inwardly-proj ectin g horizontal member of the clamp, as set' forth.
4. Inacigar-moistener, a moistenerproper, a clamp comprising an outer yoke, inner fingers parallel with the side portions of said yoke, and an inwardly-projecting horizontal yoke extending from the upper portion of the fingers, and arms pivotally connected with the upper portion of the clamp and adapted to rest upon the horizontal yoke when in their normal position, the free ends of the arms being adapted to be secured to the moistener, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SIGISMUN D STRAUSS.
