To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN JOAOHIMSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Label-Holders, of which the following is a speciiication.

The present invention relates to improvements in devices for storing labels or similar articles so that one of each kind of the labels is at all times easily obtainable, while the rest of the same are stored in receptacles and saved against careless waste and squandery and secured from being soiled.

The invention is illustrated in the several figures of the drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front elevationof a rack, containing anumber of the storage receptacles for labels, Fig. 2 a side view of the device shown in Fig. 1, Fig; 3' afront view of a pair of individual rece tacles, one of the same in part broken away," ig94 a vertical cross-section of the receptacle, Fig. 5 a top view of the same, and Figs. 6, 7 and 8, are views, similar to Figs. 3, 4 and 5, of a modified device.

A base plate 1 is provided with a number of standards or uprights 2, suitable to receive and hold the label receptacles 3, arranged in sets and held on the standards 2 by means of brackets 4. Each set of receptacles is closed with a common plate 5 at the rear end of the set of receptacles and each individual receptacle is provided with a name plate 6. The top-plate 7 shows a lip 8 at the front end of the receptacle and an opening 9 for receiving the finger, in order to remove the uppermost label of the stack of labels within the receptacle. At the rear end of the top plate 7 and secured to the underside thereof, is a rib or wire 10 for the purpose of keeping the rear end of the labels from contact with the lower face of the top plate 7 for a purpose hereinafter to be described. The front plate 11 of each receptacle is cut off at its top at 12 and provided with an adjustable resilient Washer 13, fastened to the front plate by means of a screw 14. An adjustable bottom plate 15 supports the stack of labels within the receptacle and is held in position, corresponding to the number of labels contained in the receptacle, by means of torsional springs 16 and 17. The spring 16, supporting the front end of the bottom, is of greater strength than the spring supporting the rear end, and may consist either of a spring of stronger material, or in the case of the same material of a spring having a greater number of coiled portions of greater torsional strength, or even of a plurality of springs.

It will be seen that the labels are held in thereceptacle in a way that greater pressure is exerted atthe front end thereof than at the rear end, and it will be further noticed that in case the finger is inserted into the opening 9 of the top plate 7 and the uppermost label moved forward, its rear end will be removed from under the rib or wire 9 and thereby practically freed from the pressure of the s'prin 17 It will then be possible to ush the la el through the opening formed y the lip 8 and the washer 13, sothatthe label ma be ripped and removed from the receptac e wit outdanger of tearing it.

,The Washer13 having an elongated slot 2 may be adjusted inrelation to the lip 8 of the top plate 7,-according 'to'thethickness of'the paper of which the labels are made. The formation of the top of the front plate is such that there is substantially only one point of contact between the washer 13, the label and the underside of the lip 8, so that no friction of any great degree is to be overcome by removing the label from its receptacle.

The modification, shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, comprises an auxilia receptacle or holder 18, consisting of a top ate and a front late, similar to the top an front plate of t e receptacle, illustrated in Fi s. 3, 4 and 5, and two side plates joined to t e others to form a receptacle, shown in Fig. 7, while this auxiliary receptacle is movably inclosed in the outer receptacle 3 and provided with springs 19, pressin a ainst the top of the outer receptacle, w ie to is provided with an opening 20, correspon ing to the opening 9 of the top plate of the auxiliary receptacle. The front plate of the auxiliary receptacle is provided with a resilient tongue 21, having substantially the same function as the washer 13. The arrangement of individual sets of receptacles into a row of sets, is brought about by interlocking tongues, one of which 22, at the rear of the top plate of the outer 'receptacle and another one 23, at the front of the bottom plate of said receptacle, so that a step by step arrangementas it wereis built by the interlocking of the rows of the receptacles. The spring pressure exerted upon the labels, held in the auxiliary receptacle, is brought about by similar means as the one heretofore described, and since the auxiliary receptacle is under the pressure of the springs 16 and 17 as well as the stack of labels, the uppermost of the labels will always coincide with the dispensing opening, formed by the tongue 21 and the lip 8, irrespective what pressure will be exerted upon the labels by the finger at the time of removing a label.

As new and useful is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination with a receptacle adapted to contain labels or similar articles, of an auxiliary receptacle in said first receptacle and comprising a top-plate having an aperture and front-plate forming a feeding aperture with said top-plate, resilient means between said top-plate and the cover of said first receptacle, a support for said labels, and resilient means between said support and the bottom of said first receptacle.

2. The combination with a receptacle adapted to contain labels or similar articles, of an auxiliary receptacle in said first receptacle and comprising a top plate having an aperture and a front-plate forming a feeding aperture with said top-plate, a resilient means I on said front-plate and adapted to determine one of the dimensions'of said feeding a erture, resilient means between said top-p ate and the cover of said first receptacle, a support for said labels, and resilient means between said support and the bottom of said first receptacle.

3. The combination with a receptacle adapted to contain labels or similar articles, of an auxiliary receptacle in said first receptacle and comprising a top-plate having an aperture and a front plate forming a feeding aperture with said top-plate, resilient means between said top-plate and the cover of said first receptacle, a support for said labels, and resilient means between said support and the bottom of said first receptacle, said resilient A means exerting a greater pressure at one end of said support than at the opposite end.

4. The combination with a receptacle adapted to contain labels or similar articles, of a top-plate having an aperture, a feeding aperture at the front of said receptacle, means suited to support a stack of said labels, and a plurality of torsional springs carrying said supporting means and adapted to exert greater pressure at one end of said supporting means than at the opposite end.
