SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 429,806, dated June 10, 1890.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEOPOLD DATNER,,a

subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary,

of Oswiecin, Galicia, Austria Hungary, at present residing at Brooklyn, State of New York, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Scarfs or Cravats, of which the following is a specification.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a made-up scarf or cravat in which the upper part that in use becomes soiled is composed of removable layers or sheaths, and when after a time the outer surface becomes soiled it may be removed and leave exposed the fresh new surface of the next layer. The removable layer or sheath is secured to the body of the scarf by a lacing-cord, which serves to hold the sheath tightly in position, and should the sheath stretch or tend to pncker by tightening the cords a smooth and even surface may be obtained. By this arrangement I am practically able to double and treble the length of time that a scarf may with propriety be worn, and at the same time the additional cost of applying my improvement is trifling. The sheath may be removed and cleaned, if desired, and readily put back again, and the lacing cords drawn tight to prevent any tendency to pucker.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of the upperpart of my improved scarf. Fig. 2 is a front view of the upper part of a scarf, and Fig. 3 is a view of one of the sheaths or covers detached.

In Fig. 2 an ordinary scarf is shown. It has the usual upper part A and the softer more flexible pendent part B, and from the upper corners of the part A the band extends that encircles the neck. Such a scarf is practically similar to the scarfs now in use.

Fig. 3 shows a detached sheath, (marked A,) which is designed to cover the part A, and when placed in position the lip 61. passes down behind the upper edge 0 of the part A, and the side flaps a fold behind the part A and are laced by a cord passed through apertures a Between the lip a and flaps a notches a: are formed, which facilitate in folding the material. In the rear view, Fig. 1, I have shown two such sheaths A applied in the manner described around the part A of the scarf.

I purpose having the scarfs made up in the manner shown in Fig. 1, the idea being that the individual may use the scarf until the outer sheath becomes soiled from contact with the chin or roll of the coat, when he may remove it by loosening the lacing, and the next sheath A being exposed to view he has practically a new fresh scarf. Similarly the sheath A may be removed when the part A of the scarf is exposed; or the scarf, as shown in Fig. 2, may be sold together. with one or more detached sheaths A, which the individual may apply over the part A when the latter has become soiled.

After the scarf has been worn for some time, should the sheath or cover loosen or stretch the lacing-cords may be drawn together, and thus preserve the attractive appearance of the scarf.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, in a scarf, of the upper portion, the pendent flexible portion seto the upper portion of the scarf, a detach able sheath having a lip at its upper end and flaps at each side separated from the lip by through apertures in the adjacent edges of the flaps and secures the sheath to the upper portion of the scarf, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the upper portion of the scarf, the pendent lower portion secured thereto, the neckband secured at one end to the upper portion of the scarf, a detachable sheath having a lip a and flaps a folded around the edges of the scarf and secured by a lacing-cord, and a second sheath similar in construction and secured in like manner by a lacing-cord over the first detachable sheath, substantially as described.
