SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,292, dated May 31, 1881.

Be it known that we, DAVID Fox and LoUrs ROSENBAUM, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cap; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, making` part of this specilication.

This invention is in the nature of an improvement in caps; and the invention consists in a cap with the back of the cover thereof extending in one piece below the lower edge of the cap-body, where it is stitched, to the edge of which extension of the cover is fastened, midway of its width, a band which encircles the cap, and its tuo ends united and fastened to the front ofthe cap, substantially as is hereinafter described.

This invention relates particularly to caps to be worn in cold and inclement weather, and belongs to that class known as band-caps, or caps provided with a device that can be drawn down and around the ears and neck of the wearer. This class of caps bein-g old and well known, no particular description need be given of their general construction. They all have some features in common, and theinvention hereinafter described pertains to improvements on such features.

The body A of our cap is constructed in the usual manner of any suitable material, and this body is covered with cloth or other material, which is technically known as the cap-cover A. In caps this cover usually extends no farther than the lower edge, a, of the body of the cap, but in ourinvention the rear part of this cover extends continuously below this lower edge, a, forming a cape, B. This cape is fastened to the lower edge of the cap-body, as at c. To the lower edge, d, of this cape or extension B of the cover is sewed or bound a protector or band, C. to this cape or extension B in a line, e, that is midway, or substantially midway, between the upper and lower edges, f and g, of the band, leaving these edges unconiined. This band extends on both sides from the place where it is fastened to the cape or extension toward the front of the cap, where its ends meet and are united by a button, or by any desirable means.

The cap, in this way provided with its pro tector and constructed substantially as described, is operated by pulling down the band O when it is desired to protect the ears and neck of the wearer, in which case the band is in the position shown in Figs. l and 3, and at other times the band is drawn up by merely pulling its edge upward, when the cape or extension B will readily fold at the place c, at which it is attached to the body, permitting the band C lo be raised and encircle the body ofthe cap, as shown in Fig. 2, the folded portion ot' this cape or extension B in this position lying snugly up against the cap and between it and the band C, and the nncontned edges f and g of the band readily and smoothly accommodating themselves to the shape of the cap without fold, presenting a neat appearance, and kept suth'ciently snug around the cap, when in its upper position, to prevent its falling down until intended for use, as before described.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A cap with the back part of its cover extending continuously below the lower edge of the cap, at which lower edge it is fastened to the cap-body, and provided with a band secured at the middle ot' lts width to the lower edge of said extension of the cover, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In a cap with the rear part ot' its coverextending below the lower edge of the cap-body, a protector sewed to said extension at the middle, e, of its width and extending to the front of the cap, at which point the ends of the protector are united and secured to the cap, substantially as and for the purpose described.
