UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
MARCUS MARKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN MASK-CAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,573, dated J une 15, 1875 application filed May 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARCUS MARKS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mask-Gaps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view when the cap is drawn out to cover the face and the throat. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the cap when it is folded to serve only as a head-covering. Fig. 4 is a front view of a modification of the same when drawn out.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists of a mask-cap having a skirt constructed with mouth and eye openings, the latter being provided with a foraminous shield for covering and protecting the eye-opening, in combination with a throat and chin protector attached to the skirt of the cap, and constructed to be turned up, for concealing the mouth and eye openings, all of which will be fully hereinafter described.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a cap, which is made of .any suitable material, such as beaver cloth, plush, or any fabric generally used for such purposes. With the crown of this cap is combined a skirt, B, which can either be folded up, as shown in Fig. 3, or which can be drawn down, as shownin Figs. 1 and 2. In the front part of this skirt are out two apertures, a b, one for the eyes and the other for the mouth of the person \vcaring my cap, and the eye-openin g a is protected by a shield, c, of any suitable foraminous flexible material, such as hair-cloth, fine wire netting, straw braid, or other fabric of a similar nature.
By this flexible foraminous shield c the eyes of the person wearing my cap are protected against rain, snow, or dust, and at the same time the eye-sight is not materially obstructed, so that my cap can be used with great advantage by persons of all classes compelled to work in the open air during the cold season of the year. At the same time my flexible foraminous shield can be readily applied to the skirt of the cap; it is cheap and easily removed if it should be desirable, and
when the cap is not used it can be folded in a small compass-without danger of injuring said flexible foraminous shield.
With the skirt B is combined a chin and throat protector, O, which is attached in such a manner that when the skirt is drawmdgwn said protector closes over the chin and round the throat of the person wearing my cap, and at the same time it holds the skirt close up to the ears and to the back of the head, so that by my cap the entire head is fully protected.
It is obvious that the chin and throat protector can be used on mask-caps of any suitable construction.
When the cap is folded up to be used as a head-covering only the chin and throat protector 0 serves to conceal the openings on and b, and a finished appearance is imparted to the article.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a cap having a skirt constructed with a mouth and eye openings, and a foraminous shield for covering the eyeopenings and protecting the eyes, of a chin and throat protector attached to the skirt of the cap, and constructed to be turned up to conceal the mouth and eye openings and shield, when the cap is to be used as an ordinary head-covering, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 11th day of May, 1875.
