SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,146, dated March 22, 1881.

Application led February 11, 1881.

To all 'whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL CORN, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Gap; and I do hereby declare that` the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

This invention is in the nature of animprovement in caps 5 and the invention consists in a cap with the rear portion of its cover stitched to the cap-body, above the rear lower .edge thereof`,and with a protector secured to the rear lower edge of the cover, and extend ing around the front of the cap to a point above its visor, where it is secured to the body, the body of the cap below the place at which the cape or protector is stitched thereto be ing covered with one or more separate pieces of cloth, substantially as hereinafter fully described.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l represents a side view of my cap with protector pulled down to cover the ears and neck; and Fig. 2, a rear view ofthe cap, partly in section, with protector raised and encircling body of cap.

This invention relates more particularly to caps with devices to protect the ears and neck of the wearer in inclement weather; and to that end I construct my cap with its body ot' any suitable shape and size and made from any desired material, with the rear portion of its cover A extending to the lower edge, ct, of the cap-body, but sewed to the cap-body some distance above this lower edge, as at b. To the lower edge of this rear portion of the cover A of the cap is secured, by binding or in any desirable manner, a band or protector, B, the front portions, c, of this band encircling the body ofthe cap, and extending forward and above the visor d, where they are secured in place. To the body of the cap, and below the place, b, where the cover is stitched to the body, are secured one or more pieces of cloth, C, of the same material as is the cover of the cap.

When this cap above described is to be used by the wearer for the purpose of protecting his ears and neck from cold, Snc., the band or protector B is drawn down below the lower edge of the cap-body and around the ears and neck of the wearer, which it will cover closely, attording ample protection. l (See Fig. l.)

To restore the protector toits position around the cap, (see Fig. 2,) it is simply necessary to take the protector with thel hands, and by a single fold upward restore it to the position shown in Fig. 2. The fact that the cover at its rear is sewed to the body of the cap above the lower edge of the cap-body enables the wearer to in this way restore the protectoraround the body of the cap when not in use by a simple single operation, and thespace on the body of the cap which is below the points at which the rear part of this body is sewed to the cap being covered by one or more pieces oi' cloth, C, imparts a iinish to the cap. y i

By constructing a cap in the way above de-` scribed, not only is a good and efficient cap produced of a kind similar to that described in an application made by me simultaneously herewith, but in this cap the band or protector can be made from remnants of cloth, thereby eecting a saving, and the protector being joined at its rear to the cover of the cap makes a natural t'old, which will facilitate its restoration around the cap after it has been pulled down.

Having thus described my invention, what lclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A cap withl the rear portion ot' its cover secured to the cap-body above the lower edge ofthe cap-body, and with a band or protector consisting of a separate piece ot' cloth sewed to the lower edge of the cover of the cap, in the manner hereinbetore described.
