HEAD AND NECK PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 566,824, dated September 1, 18 96.

Be it known that I, ADNA VAN WORMER, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head and Neck Protecting Attachments for Hats, Caps, and Bonnets, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates generally to head-apparel, and more particularly to a head and neck protector; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to construct an improved protector or head-apparel that can be expeditiously positioned upon the caps such as are usually worn by car-drivers, con doctors, &c.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my protector, the same being unfolded and the eyeshield detached therefrom. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the eye-shield used in connection with my improved head-apparel or protector. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the indicated line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction of the arrow in said figure. Fig. 4; is avert-ical sectional View taken approximately on the indicated line a d of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of my improved head-apparel or protector, the same being applied to a cap such as is usually worn by car-drivers, con ductors, 8:0. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of my improved head-apparel or protector, the same being shown as it appears in proper position upon the head of a person when said person is wearing an ordinary hat. Fig. '7 is an elevation of a strap used for positioning the protector upon the head when the same is worn in combination with a hat.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates an apron, the same being rectangular in form, constructed of any flexible and preferably waterproof material, and having the dependingportion 2. A transverse slot 3 is located near the upper edge of the apron l and at the longitudinal center thereof. Immediately below this slot 3 in the apron 1 is a rectangular aperture or opening 4, there being located near the edges of this aperture i a series of receiving portions 5 of ordinary fasteners.

Transversely positioned in the apron 1 a slight distance below the aperture 4 is a segmental slot 6,the same being covered by a flap 7, constructed of the same material as is the apron 1, said flap 7 being held in proper position over said segmental slot 6 by a row or rows of stitching 8 adjacent the upper edge of said flap 7.

Approximately half-Way between the ends of the rectangular opening or aperture 4 and the ends of the apron 1 are a plurality of apertures 9, the same being covered by triangular fiaps 10, said flaps 10 being constructed, preferably, of the same material as is the apron 1. The apices of these triangular-shaped flaps 10 are adjacent the upper edge of the apron l, and said triangular-shaped flaps 10 are so stitched or sewed over the apertures 9 as that a bulge or fullness of the material is formed between the lower ends of the rectangular-shaped flaps l0.

Along the top edge of and near the ends of the apron 1 are the receiving portions 11 of ordinary fasteners. Arranged along one end of the apron 1 is a series of receiving portions 12 of ordinary fasteners, and arranged along the opposite end of the apron 1 is a series of the inserting portions 13 of ordinary fasteners, said inserting portions being so located as to coincide with the receiving portions 12 on the other end when the protector is. in proper position upon the cap or upon the head of the wearer.

14: indicates a rectangular section of flexible transparent material, such as mica, &c., the same being bound on both sides and adjacent its edges by rectangular sections of material 15, said material being analogous to the material of which the entire protector is constructed. Located in these rectangular sections 15 are the inserting parts 16 of ordinary fasteners, said inserting parts being so located as to be snapped into and engaged by the receiving parts 5 of the fasteners that are located in the apron 1 adjacent the edges of the rectangular aperture or opening 4..-

17 indicates a flexible strap having fixed on both ends the inserting parts 18 of ordinary fasteners.

20 indicates a cap, such as is usually worn by car-drivers, conductors, &c., in the lower edges of which are securely positioned the inserting portions 21 of ordinary fasteners, the same being so located as to be engaged by the receiving parts 11 of ordinary fasteners that are located in the upper edge of the apron 1.

When my improved head-apparel or protectoris used in connection with the cap 20,the vizor of said cap is passed through the transversely-positioned slot 3 and the upper edge of the apron 1 passed around the sides and rear of the cap, the receiving parts 11 of the fasteners located in the upper edge of the apron 1 engaging the inserting portions 21 of the fasteners that are located in the lower edge of the cap 20. The receiving portions 12 of the fasteners that are located in one end of the apron 1 engage the inserting portions 13 of the fasteners that are located in the other end of said apron. Thus when the cap is'in position upon the head of the wearer and the protector positioned as described upon the cap the entire head and neck of the wearer will be protected in a very complete and efficient manner. In extremely inclement weather, or at any time desired, the eye-shield comprising the flexible transparent section 14 is positioned upon and over the rectangular aperture 4 by engaging the in sorting parts 16 of the fasteners that are located in the edges of said eye-shield in the receiving parts 5 of the fasteners that are located adjacent the edges of the rectangular aperture 4. hen the protector is properly positioned, the apertures 9 in the apron 1 occupy positions adjacent the ears of the wearer, thus allowing all sound to be communicated to the ears of the wearer.

\Vhen it is desired to wear the protector with an ordinary hat, one of the inserting parts 18 of the ordinary fastener that is located in the ends of the strap 17 is positioned in one of the receiving parts 11 of the fastener that is located in the top edge of the apron 1. Said strap 17 is now passed over the top or crown of the head, and the inserting part 18 of the fastener that is in the other end of said strap 17 is positioned in one of the receiving parts 11 of the fastener that is located in the upper edge of the apron 1 and on the other side of the head. This strap so positioned firmly locates and holds the protector upon the head, and when an ordinary hat is placed upon the wearers head it will be seen how said device affords the desired protection. If desired, the eye-shield can be quickly and easily removed at any time.

By constructing the apron 1 with the downwardly-pending portion 2 the neck of the wearer will be amply protected.

Head-apparel or a protector constructed in accordance with my invention presents a neat appearance, is expeditiously applied or removed, can be folded to occupy a comparatively small space, and possesses superior ad vantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.

hat I claim is As an article of manufacture, a head and neck protector comprising the rectangular apron 1 designed to pass around the face and have its ends fastened together in the rear of the wearers head, means of fastening said ends together, the depending portion 2 attached to said apron, the transverse slot 3 located near the upper edge and at the longitudinal center of said apron 1, the rectangular aperture 1 in said apron located immediately below said slot 3, the segmental slot 6 transversely positioned in the apron 1 a slight distance below the aperture 4, the flap 7 stitched in position over saidslot 6 for covering the same, the apertures 9 approximately halfway between the ends of the rectangular aperture 4 and the ends of the apron 1, the triangular flaps 10 having their apices adjacent the upper edges of the apron and so stitched over the apertures 9 as that a bulge of the material is formed between the lower ends of saidflaps 10, the transparent section 14 having its edges bound and means of attaching said section 14 to said apron 1, and means of attaching the apron 1 to the hat of the wearer, all arranged substantially as and for the purposes stated.
