COMBINED TAM-O-SHANTER AND HOOD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVE I-IURLBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johns, Multnomah county, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined. Tam-o-Shanters and Hoods, of which the following is a speeification.
This invention relates to a combined tamo-shanter and hood, or to a head covering convertible from one form into another with. out requiring detachment of any of the parts or additions thereto.
The essential objects of the invention are to rovide a head covering capable of service in 'air and stormy weather, and economize in the use of devices of this class by making one complete article take the place of two independent head coverings without in the least inconveniencing the user.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the construction. and arrangement of parts which will be more fully hereinafter explained in preferred form and as illustrative of one embodiment of the invention.
In said drawings :"Figure I is an elevation of the improved head covering arranged in the form of a tam-o-shanter. Fig. II is a similar view showing the top partially raised to illustrate the separable construction of the rim and a part of the body. Fig. III is a side elevation of the head covering shown arranged as a hood. Fig. IV is a rear elevation of the covering illustrated by Fig. III.
The head covering essentially comprises a body (5), a top (6) and a rim (7) in the form of a reinforcing or stiffening facing applied and secured to the exterior of the lower edge portion of the body. The top (6) is quite full and attached to the body (5) which is also loose. The rim (7 and a portion of the body (5) have a vertical opening (8) formed therein, said opening providing two flaps (9) and (10) over which is extended the strip of material forming said rim. The flap (10) is arranged to overlap the flap (9), the latter Specification of Letters Patent.

having a resilient stud (11) 011 its exterior to engage a socket (12) exposed at the inner side of the said flap (10) so that the flaps may be positively fastened when the head covering is used as a tam-oshanter as shown by Figs. I and II. The free corners or extremities of the flaps (9) and (10) are so shaped, as at 13, and 14, that they will form short hood aprons when the conversion from one form to another is made, and secured thereto are tying strings or ribbons (15) which may be hidden within the covering when arranged as a tam-o-shanter.
In arranging the covering as a hood, the flaps (9) and (10) are released and the top (6) and body (5) pushed out to form the hood back, the rim (7) then forming the band or rim adjacent the face of the wearer, and the said flaps are caused to depend to provide small side aprons for the hood to snugly embrace opposite portions of the neck. The strings or ribbons (15) are drawn out and used for securing the hood applied as in ordinary devices of this class.
It is obvious that in warm or fair weather the improved head covering may be worn as a cap or tam-o-shanter, and in cold or stormy weather may be quickly adjusted into hood form to cover the head and ears.
Suitable material may be used in forming the improved head covering, and it will also be made in different sizes.
