`SEECIFIGALTION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,613, dated ebruary 18, 1902.
Application filed March Z0, 1901. Serial No. 51,990. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom t 71mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID LIcH'rnNs'rniN, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in caps of that class adapted for use by conductors, drivers, and others much exposed to severe weather, the object of the invention being to provide a durable and comfortable cap of this class affording protection to the forehead, ears, and back of the head as well as to the upper part of the same; and the invention consists of a cap comprising a body, a protector' extending continuously around said body at the inside of the same, the front portion of said protector being of less width than the side and rear portions of the same, a reinforcing-strip secured to said body at the inside of the same, a lining covering said reinforcing-strip, and a connecting-band of flexible material extending continuously around the cap-body at the inside of the same and composed of two plies attached at one edge to said protector, one ply at each side of the same and at the other edge to said reinforcing strip and lining.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 are perspective views of my improved cap, showing the same, respectively, with the ,protector out of and in position for use; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the cap, the head-protector being folded into the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The body of my improved cap may be madev in anysuitable manner. The same as shown consists of a side wall composed of two layers a a of fabric, a top b secured to said layers, and a lining d secured within the side wall and top. The side layers may be turned over at their upperand lower edges, as shown, the edges of the same being bound with suitable binding. The side wall of the cap is preferably reinforced at its lower portion by a reinforcing-strip o2 of cardboard or other suitable material, and the lining is also preferably reinforced by a reinforoingstri] d. A
vizor c of any suitable construction may be secured tothe front portion of the cap-bodyin any suitable manner, as by stitching the same between the lining and side wall of the cap, as shown. The head-protector c is made of such size as to fit within the body of the cap, and the same is made, preferably, from the same in aterial as the material of the side walls of the cap. The protector c is attached to the capbody by means of a strip or band c of fabric thinner than the material. ot' the protector, and the lower edge of said band is upturned and the upturned portion c2 stitched to the cap-body, preferably only to the lining d of the same, above the lower edge of the capbody. By reason of the fact that the lower edge of the band c' is upturned and the same secured by said upturned portion to the capbody the lower edge of the said band e does not come in contact with the head of the wearer when the protector is turned up in the body of the cap, so that a more rounded and comfortable edge is presented to contact with the head. The band c is preferably composed at its lower portion, which is secured to the capbody, of two plies of fabric. This may be acf complished in the manner shown by folding the fabric, one edge of the same being secured vto one side of the protector near one edge of the same and the fabric thence extending downwardly to its attachment with the cap-body and then upwardly. The lower edge. of the protector is thereby completely inclosed and protected and a finished surface provided, whether the same be turned in or out. The projecting and upturned portion of the band c is made of approximately the same width as the distance from its connection with the cap-body to the lower edge of the same, so as to throw the head-protector itself entirely out of the cap-body when the same is turned outwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the thin bande instead of the thicker material of the protector being thus brought between the lower edge of the capbody and the head of the wearer, so that the size of the cap is substantially the same whether the protector be turned in or out.
My improved cap affords protection to the entire head, with the exception of the face, and provides a comfortable and desirable arnv IOO ticle of headwear for the 'use of all who are exposed to severe Weather and to changes of weather.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire t0 secure by Letters Patentv A cap, consisting of a body, a protector extending continuously around said body at the inside of the same, the front portion of said protector being of less Width than the side and rear port-ions of the same, a reinforcingstrip secured to said body at the inside of the sam e, a lining covering said reinforcing-strip, and a connecting-band of flexible material extending continuously around the cap-body at the inside of the same, and composed of two plies attached at one edge to said protector, one ply at each side of the same, and at the other edge to said reinforcing-strip and lining, substantially as set forth,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
D AVID LICHTENSTEIN.
