Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ALBERT KOMP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. I
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,6!2, dated December 8, 1874 application filed October 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT KoMP, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Neck-Ties, of which the following is a specification: v
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figurel represents a front view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in the plane 00 as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists of a bow, the shield of which is cut out of pasteboard or other similar material, to correspond to the shape of the side pieces, and covered with one piece of silk, satin,or other suitable material, the central part of which is stiffened by a backing of paper or other suitable material, and folded under or embossed to form an imitation crosspiece, thereby producing a bow which is handsome in appearance, easily manufactured, and durable.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the shield of my bow, which is cut out of pasteboard, card-board, or other suitable material, with wings a a, which correspond in shape to the side pieces of a bow of the ordinary construction. This shieldis covered with a sheet, I), of silk, satin,or other suitable materiahthe edges of which are drawn over the edges of the shield, and fastened on its back by suitable cement. A lining, c, of muslin or other suitable material, conceals the edges of the covering material, and assists in retaining the same firmly in position. The central portion of the covering material is strengthened by a lining, cl, of paper, which is attached thereto bya suitable cement, and whieh imparts to the same the required stiffness. The cement which I use, by preference, is gutta-percha in sheets.
By means of this stiffening I am enabled to form on the covering material, during the operation of applying it to the shield, two folds, c e, and I can emboss that portion situated between these two l'olds, so that by the central part of the covering an imitation cross-piece is produced, and thereby the appearance of my neck-tie is materially improved.
The side pieces of my neck-tie or bow are stiff and not liable to curl up; and the imitation cross-piece has the appearance of the cross-piece of an ordinary bow, and it can be produced with less labor and material than required for the productionof a separate crosspiece, such as used in the manufacture of ordinary bows.
The elastic loop f, which serves to Esecure my bow to the collar-stud, is fastened in the shield A in any desirable manner. In the example shown in the drawing the shield is providedwith two holes, the upper hole being large enough to allow the knot g of said loop topass, so that when. theloop is drawn through both holes the knot will catch at the inner edges of the lower hole, and the loop is firmly retained in position.
It is obvious that my bow can be made in various shapes by changing the form of the shield and that of the imitation cross-piece.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The shield A, formed with the wings a a, and provided with the sheet I) of silk or other material overlapping the edges of the shield, with the lining covering and concealing the edges of the sheet I), and the lining cl of paper for strengthening the central portion of the material, the said parts being pressed to form the two folds e c, and the whole being con structed and arranged substan tialiy as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of October, 1874.
A. KOMP. [L. s.]
